The western honey bee (Apis mellifera) is the most common of the 7–12 species of honey bees worldwide. The genus name Apis is Latin for ‘bee’ and mellifera is the Latin for ‘honey-carrying’.

The striped abdomen is formed of six visible sections, each of which is dotted with tiny openings, known as spiracles, used for respiration. The underside of the abdomen has four pairs of wax glands. The wax exuded from these glands appears as thin, clear scales on the abdomen and is later chewed and mixed with saliva to form whitish beeswax for the hive. Workers are also equipped with a specialized pollen-collecting structure on the fourth segment of both of the hind legs, known as a pollen basket, or corbicula.

The green longhorn (Adela reaumurella) is a lepidopteran from the moth family Adelidae, the fairy longhorn moths.

The wingspan of Adela reaumurella ranges from 14 to 18 millimeter.

The flight time of these day-active moths ranges from April to June. The males are often seen in the spring sunshine forming swarms of up to 30 specimens. If a female flies through the swarm, it is caught by a male and the mating in flight takes place. The caterpillars live among fallen leaves from birch and oak and feed on leaves remains, often Quercus species, forming mines on them. They protect themselves for the summer and winter in an oblong, brown bag-like structure of small pieces of fallen leaves. In this bag also the pupation takes place the following spring.

The UK’s favourite bird. Thanks to its bright red breast, it’s familiar throughout the year and especially at Christmas. Males and females look identical, young birds have no red breast and are spotted with golden brown. Robins sing nearly all year round and despite their cute appearance, they are aggressively territorial and are quick to drive away intruders. They will sing at night next to street lights.

The Cormorant is a large, black waterbird whose size and colour make it very visible. With a reptilian neck, it has an almost prehistoric appearance. It is often seen standing with its wings held out to dry.

These familiar fish-eating waterbirds are a common sight on both inland freshwater and along our coasts. The similarly looking, sea-faring S**g can confuse some of the most experienced birders on a coastal cliff. In the breeding season, Cormorants have white patches near the base of their beaks and on their thighs.

📷 Canon EOS 7D + Sigma 105mm 1:2.8 DG Macro HSM

Auricularia auricula-judae, commonly known as wood ear, jelly ear or historically as Jew's ear, is a species of fungus in the order Auriculariales. Basidiocarps (fruit bodies) are brown, gelatinous, and have a noticeably ear-like shape. They grow on wood, especially elder. The specific epithet is derived from the belief that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from an elder tree.

The fungus can be found throughout the year in Europe, where it normally grows on wood of broadleaf trees and shrubs. Auricularia auricula-judae was used in folk medicine as recently as the 19th century for complaints including sore throats, sore eyes and jaundice, and as an astringent. It is edible but not widely consumed.

Coprinopsis lagopus, commonly known as the hare’s foot inkcap is a species of fungus in the family Psathyrellaceae.

Seen in bright sunlight the intricate beauty of these delicate little inkcaps is quite stunning, but the fruit-bodies go through their entire visible lifecycle within 24 hours before dissolving into a black ink - a process called deliquescence.

So if you spot one of these special species make sure you stick around for as long as possible to take in all its beauty!
