This week’s recommendation is for anyone who loves a dark thriller that will keep you guessing throughout.

Mask Girl is Mo-Mi Kim, an office worker by day and a masked live stream dancer by night. As someone who has been bullied about her looks throughout childhood, Mo-Mi finds her nighttime alter ego is unlocking a chain of events that will overtake her life and have far reaching consequences.

This antihero k-drama has some gory scenes and is pretty explicit so be warned. The reason we loved this series is that it has so many twists and turns and interweaving character stories, so you never know where it’s going to end up. Yeom Hye-Ran has a stand out performance as Kim Kyung-Ja an overbearing mother with an axe to grind.

This is a heartwarming and funny animated story which captures the hearts of anyone whose parents have emigrated from another country.

In a world where everyone belongs to one of the four element groups (earth, wind, fire, water) Ember and her fire family have settled far from their homeland but brought along the tradition of fire-making by opening up a fire place shop. Ember’s lifelong ambition is to be able to take over her father’s shop. But one day she meets Wade (part of the water family) and everything changes.

The thing we love most about this movie is how sensitively it deals with the topics of traditions and culture, especially emigrating from your home country. There’s not many movies for children that attempt or achieve this. Elemental serves as a reminder to never forget your roots, even in a world that is rapidly changing.
