Star Gate - A night time trek up Crook Hill to this lovely spot over looking Ladybower reservoir on Friday night 12th December. Considering the time of year it was surprisingly mild up there. The hardest part was getting a shot without any traffic on the roads around the reservoir. You can clearly see the constellation Orion on the right, Jupiter on the left and the brightest star Sirius just above the horizon shining through the clouds. Shot with Sony a6000 with 16mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens. f/2.8 ISO 1600 20 seconds.

Sticky Sticky Stick Stick - A super clear night at West Bay on my recent holiday down South. I was struggling with compositions to be honest but I’d seen this large piece of driftwood jammed in the rocks during the day and the Milky Way lined up quite nicely in PhotoPills night AR so decided to give it a try. The foreground lit up by the street lights on the Esplanade. A single exposure at f/2.8 ISO 3200 30 seconds taken with Sony a6000 and Laowa 9mm Zero-D lens processed with DxO DeepPRIME and Photoshop.

Roundhouse - Star trails at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire 12th July 2025. Just before getting here I’d never seen the road so busy near midnight and wondered why, I found out when I arrived and it just happened to be the end of Classic Ibiza. I carried on anyway with my intended location keeping the leaving traffic and lights out of shot. I was lucky to get the house lit as after one shot the lights turned off.

The 2:15am alarm paid off as I always check for NLC’s from the bathroom window and after seeing them this morning I set off the the closest reservoir to me to grab some shots. 3:04am 30th June 2025 at Blithfield Reservoir, Staffordshire. Taken hand held with iPhone 13 & Sony a6000 16mm Sigma lens, Samyang 35mm and Samyang 50mm lenses.

Burrow Mump and the Milky Way. I only had the one clear night on my recent holiday down South and somewhere I’ve been before but never managed to capture the Milky Way here. Very limited to my composition here as the top of the hill was covered with tall Stinging Nettles, but was nice to be able to capture The Dark Horse Nebula and Rho Ophiuchi up high on the horizon.
A single exposure f/2.8 ISO 3200 25 seconds taken with Sony a6000 and Laowa 9mm Zero-D lens processed with DxO DeepPRIME and Photoshop.

Let There Be Light - Another bucket list location ticked off. A two and half hours drive to Dinorwic Quarry and a fair walk to get to these well photographed Barracks. These cottages were built in the 1870s as housing for quarrymen who lived too far away to return home each night. There are two rows of 11 cottages built using granite blocks. I used a torch with a yellow filter on it entering each building with my camera connected with an RF remote with a 10 second timer lighting them from the inside. A two minute exposure for the foreground and 25 second exposure for the Milkyway.

Passing Through - I’ve not been out doing any night time photography since October 31 2024. But given the opportunity of a clear night with no Moon on Friday night I decided to visit two locations this being the 2nd stop off at Winnats Pass. I was in two minds going here as was really cold and I didn’t have many layers on, fortunately I found two extra fleeces in the boot of my car so decided to go up. One things for sure there’s not much traffic here at 3am so had to wait a fair bit of time for traffic to go through the pass. The Cygnus region of the Milky Way just rising on the horizon.
