Beauty lives in the everyday.
In texture. In light. In shadow. In Colour.
In disciplined lines. In Curves.
In repetition, restraint, and powerful negative space.
Those who choose to look closely find it everywhere.
This weekend I immersed myself in an underground designed by Harry Weese. Its iconic vaulted ceilings, often labelled Brutalist, unapologetic in concrete, felt anything but harsh to me.
They were rhythmic. Sculptural. Intentional. Standing beneath them, watching light move across the form, I saw elegance in the engineering. A quiet confidence in the structure.
After two almost full days underground, I realised I’d only just begun to understand the space. Only in my last hours did I feel that I was really starting to capture the grace that the space deserves.
Some architecture isn’t meant to be passed through. It deserves to be studied. Experienced. Unlocked slowly. I was unprepared to do the photography justice, I only came with my camera and one lens, I intended to do one shot, I surprised myself…..It’s therefore one to return to.
There’s more here, it deserves more time and I’m excited to revisit it.
Next time you’re running between lines, take a moment to appreciate the vision of Harry Weese.
Here are some of the portrait oriented shots, I’ll share the landscape oriented ones another day. 😁
Thanks to the WMATA staff who chatted to the excited British lady loving their metro!
