I often get asked what lens's should I buy. Well that depends how much you want to carry about, they are heavy. Sigma and Nikon lens's are obviously amazing but expensive but it is true you get what you pay for.
My favourite lens is the Nikon 28mm to 70mm f2.8. Shown here on the camera. Often called the wedding lens because it will cover all the shots you need for a wedding and being f2,8 it can handle poor light. The glass is enormous so you get perfect sharpness at the edges even on full aperture. The drawback is, it is very expensive.
The next lens I use a lot is the Nikon super wide angle 10mm to 20mm f1.4. I use this for interiors or where you want to add impact to a shot, or where space is limited to get everything in the frame.
A good all round lens is the Sigma 28mm to 135mm f3.8.
The 70mm to 300mm f4.0 I don't use a lot but if you are going to photograph sports you will need a telephoto lens.
A strong bag to put it all in is a must.
A Manfrotto tripod, 055X PRO B is a very sturdy well made piece of kit.
The best accessory is someone else to carry the gear.

When doing on location work, should your verticals be vertical ie. the columns in this shot. I think it gives a much more interesting composition by turning the camera on a slight angle it kind of puts movement into the shot. Shot on film.

The only way to get a complete black background is have no light in the studio other than the studio flash heads. It is good to have a little light on the background that is controllable to give separation and some depth in the shot.

Al Atkins (founder member of 'Judas Priest). In my studio I always worked in a complete black out. That way I could use the model lights on my flash heads to see what the lighting was doing. I would look for bad shadows, where was the lighting spilling over onto backgrounds. Are the front lights causing shadows onto the background from the subject. If I was using coloured gels over the flash heads was the colour too strong or too weak. I would also use barn doors on the flash head to create shadow areas where I wanted them. I would nearly always use a spot flash to highlight the face and a backlight to catch the hair. Both of these lights had to be turned up or down in the brightness to get just the right amount of highlight. This amount of lighting control can only be done in a studio black out.
Most of my photos were done with just two backdrops , black or white.
This photo demonstrates all of the above. Backlight on the hair, Face spot with barn doors to cause shadow’s on the bottom half of the jacket. Red gel over the flash head to give colour onto the black paper background. 135mm focal length lens.

Super shot. It really helps if your model has some idea about posing, you can then just give some direction on head, hands an feet positions. It is up to you then to get the camera settings/ angles and lighting right.

I just love these guys. It was a laugh a minute in the studio.

This shot taken in 2001 was long before all the editing you can do in your phone very easily now. The image still has to be right to start with, lighting etc. I love the softness of the image. Getting your subject to lean into the camera by dropping the near shoulder and taking a shot from a tiny bit above the subject on a 100mm lens will give you a more interesting composition.

This girl was great fun to work with. She wanted something different. I think we got there between us.

Bo***ir photography should be tasteful and is almost an art form. To get the best from a shoot the lighting must be spot on.
