Somewhere over Austria

There are many reasons why Austria is a wonderful country to visit, but the first reason is before you actually touch down.

Flying into Innsbruck Airport is definitely not recommended if you are a nervous flyer. It is a spectacular approach, weaving through the mountains before landing on a short runway nestled in the River Inn valley.

Despite this, I love flying into Innsbruck. If the visibility is clear the scenery is wonderful. However it's worse if the clouds are low. You know the mountains are there but you can't see them. You just hope the pilot can...!!

Chamonix French Alps

I don't normally post pictures of myself, I'm usually pointing the camera at something or other. However Mrs H snapped this one catching me unawares. Thought it worth putting on.

Looking towards the Mont Blanc massif. The rounded snow covered dome is actually the summit of Mont Blanc. At 4,808 metres (15,774 ft) it is the highest mountain in Western Europe.

Due to the extremely hot dry summer, the authorities have taken the rare step of imposing a ban on climbing Mont Blanc. This is due to melting permafrost thus causing dangerous rockfalls.

This picture was taken 11 years ago. I'm guessing there's less ice now.

Mer de Glace - Chamonix, French Alps

If anyone needed proof of global warming then one only has to look at the retreating alpine glaciers. The Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) is a perfect visual example.

It can be seen clearly how deep & wide the glacier used to be. Although it still has a thickness of over 200 meters, it has lost 100 meters in depth in less than a 100 years. It is thought that by the year 2100 it will have disappeared entirely.

Arosa Switzerland

Take the Arosabahn train from Chur and about an hour and 1200meters of climbing later you arrive at the mountain village of Arosa. Although primarily a winter skiing resort, Arosa has many miles of summer hiking trails, with plenty of chances to stop for food & the odd b**r or two.

Unfortunately if I were to be a little critical, Arosa like many Swiss mountain resorts, is becoming a concrete jungle with unattractive hotels & holiday apartments, losing much of its Alpine charm. That's the price of tourism I suppose.

This is unlike Switzerland's next door neighbour Austria, which is in the main far prettier. Austria despite having many mountain resorts has kept its 'chocolate-box' look. Very few concrete monstrosities, just traditional Alpine Chalets adorned with flowering window boxes.

Plus the Austrians, especially waiters & waitresses, regularly wear their traditional lederhosen & dirndls. A beautiful country.

Klosters Switzerland

There are many things which make walking in the Alps wonderful, the views & the b**rs to name but three. Contrary to what you may think, walking in the Alps is usually much easier than walking the hills of the UK. Cable cars and chair lifts to get you up high, the paths are well maintained, plenty of refreshment stops, stunning views around every corner, if you're lucky sounds of Marmots.

Most of all though, as long as you know where you are heading for, you are extremely unlikely to get lost. At every path junction there will be a direction signpost. Best of all no distances are given, just walking time to get there. In hilly terrain time is far more important than distance. Is it uphill, downhill or flat? Good surface of rocky?
