Happy accidents can occur at any time. At this point, I saw the colours of the reflection. We’d both been working to avoid reflections up to this point, then the colours popped out

I love it when a plan comes together. We had the idea for a Hollywood-backstage theme. I’d found some lights and we’d checked with Phil at the Boardroom what was already present at the studio.

Then on the morning of our shoot, the studio took delivery of the big lights you see in the image, so my smaller lights didn’t need to come out of the car.

The lights you see weren’t doing much. They were on and providing light but the studio’s Elinchroms were doing the main work. I remember two being used; one large softbox as a key light and a small softbox off to the side

Playing with colours with Anthea.

We’d already shot a couple of other themes by this stage; both with more natural-looking light. Then we ventured into bold colours, picking the strongest background and we went from there

This was about two things.

1) the state of the dress at the moment. It needs work on it and that’s ok. There’s no deadline for this

2) using the camera stabiliser in close proximity. No doubt, an electronic gimbal would be better and easier but this was to hand so I used it. I was curious how good it could be.

With some shoot planning and practice, it’ll be better.

Maybe the next one will have a more complete dress in it

Catching the light with the beads

It was the last session of the studio shoot so we were playing with different light

I remember placing some Pika200pro lights in some odd places. Up high with snoots, cross body with different modifiers to see what we could get, as well as another to light and colour the background a bit
