Our University of Sheffield PhD Candidate, Rebecca England, has received a Pathfinder Grant from the The Explorers Club to continue field testing the SpectroGas, her new, low-cost, spectroscopy based gas monitoring instrument.

Rebecca and Dr. Tom Pering will be travelling to Costa Rica in August to trial the SpectroGas on two different volcanoes, Poas and Turrialba. They will be working alongside colleagues at the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (OVSICORI) and comparing their SpectroGas results against existing gas monitoring equipment.

Earlier this month we had the opportunity to participate in the The University of Sheffield Geography Society charity football match alongside several colleagues in the School of Geography and Planning at the University of Sheffield. We really value our links with the The University of Sheffieldeld and enjoy opportunities like this one to engage with students and fellow staff members. Everyone has been exceptionally supportive of us as a fledgling business and this is one of the many ways we hope to give back to our community. A great time was had by all and we look forward to next year's match.

We are excited to announce our new grant from the Economic and Social Reasearch Council (ESRC) Rapid Impact Fund in collaboration with the University of Sheffield. This funding will enable us to expand the reach of our UV camera volcano monitoring technology. The grant will fund two permanent PiCam systems in Costa Rica, as well as moving one of our existing PiCam systems in Chile to a new location.

We are excited to announce that VolcanoTech have officially incorporated as a company in the UK as of January 2026. We now enter an exciting phase of work as we begin operations, with the ultimate goal of making it easier for communities around volcanoes and researchers to access vital monitoring equipment.

Dr. Thomas Wilkes will be travelling to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile next week to take part in this years' CIGEFLU International Course on Geochemistry of Volcanic and Geothermal Fluids, hosted by our friends . The international course is designed to give hands on experience of various gas monitoring techniques and equiptment. Dr. Wilkes will be teaching the remote sensing of volcanic gases, specifically detection from more removed distances using predominantly UV cameras and spectrometers.

This will be the team's third time teaching on the course, the images are from Dr. Tom Pering's trip in 2023.

The course runs from October 26th to November 1st in San Pedro de Atacama. Keep an eye on our Social media next week for more from Dr. Wilkes at CIGEFLU!

Dr. Tom Pering is in Japan this week at the Volcanology in Practice Symposium hosted by Niigata University. We are very excited to be an official partner of the symposium.

Dr. Pering will be giving the keynote lecture on Thursday, October 9th at 09:00, opening the discussions on The Next Generation of Volcanic Monitoring and Processes by sharing results and reflections on our low cost UV PiCam network for measuring Sulphur dioxide.

Tom is also presenting a poster by our PhD student, Rebecca England about the SpectroGas instrument she has been developing, stop by the poster session on Thursday and say hello.

And finally Dr. Pering will be wrapping up Thursday by hosting the Volcano Monitoring Tools Workshop, showcasing our PiCam and PiGas alongside fieldwork equiptment by other colleagues and giving pointers on how to choose monitoring tools.

So if you are in Niigata this week make sure to catch Tom for a chat, he's very excited to share our latest projects and answer questions.

After a bit of a summer break and a couple busy weeks as the new academic year got started, the team is back and ready for action. We thought some new swag would be a great way to kickstart our autumn. We have lots of exciting trips and events coming up as well, we can't wait to share what we're up to.
