Today is International Women’s Day, and I want to tell you about a woman I photographed not long ago.
She didn’t meet the love of her life until later than most in her forties. When she finally did, they only had a few wonderful years together before he passed away. After that, the world went quiet for her. She retreated. Hid herself away. Five more years passed where life felt smaller, safer, but very lonely.
Then at 70 she did something that frightened her.
She booked a bo***ir shoot.
She told me afterwards that she almost cancelled several times. She worried about her body, about her age, about what people might think. But she came anyway.
And something shifted.
Seeing herself through someone else’s eyes reminded her that life wasn’t over. That joy hadn’t expired. That confidence isn’t reserved for the young.
Now she goes on holiday by herself. She wears a bikini. She laughs easily. She takes up space in the world again.
Not because a camera changed her life.
Because she decided she was still allowed to live it.
So today, on International Women’s Day, this is my gentle nudge to any woman reading this who has been putting herself last for years.
You do not have to disappear just because time has passed.
You are still allowed to feel confident. You are still allowed to feel seen. You are still allowed to do something brave just for you.
If there is a little voice inside you that has been whispering “maybe one day”… listen to it.
Sometimes one small, slightly scary step is all it takes to remind you that you are not done yet.
And trust me — I see women prove that to themselves every single week.
