FAQ: How long does a session last?

It's one of the questions I'm asked most often.

For my outdoor sessions, I usually allow 60–90 minutes. I don't believe in rushing dogs from one pose to the next. Instead, I let them settle, explore their surroundings and get comfortable. Every dog is different, and the most beautiful photographs happen when they can simply be themselves.

Studio sessions are a little shorter, usually around 30 minutes. My studio is designed to keep things simple and relaxed, allowing us to create a wonderful variety of portraits in a calm, comfortable space without needing a lengthy session.

Whether we're outdoors or in the studio, every session is led by your dog. Their comfort always comes first, and that's when the magic happens. ❤️

Have you got another question about a session? Pop it in the comments and I'll happily answer it.

What should I wear?

Styling tips for beautiful, timeless dog portraits.

I always recommend choosing clothing that feels comfortable and reflects your personal style.

Soft, natural colours tend to photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on you and your dog. Think earthy greens, soft blues, creams, browns and muted neutrals, rather than bright colours or bold patterns.

For woodland sessions at locations like Black Park, textured fabrics such as tweed, knitwear and denim work beautifully, and practical footwear like wellies or walking boots looks perfectly at home.

Once your session is booked, I'll send you a simple style guide with suggestions tailored to the season and location, so choosing what to wear feels easy and stress-free.

The photo below is a perfect example of an outfit that works beautifully for a woodland session at Black Park, timeless, comfortable and in harmony with the surroundings.

Beautiful photographs are important.

But it's the memories you make together, and the way you feel throughout the experience, that stay with you long after the session ends.

15 months of Sydney.

Still discovering the world one curious glance at a time.

Some dogs fill a room with noise and excitement. Sydney has a quieter way about him. A thoughtful look, a gentle presence, and those expressive eyes that always seem to be asking a question.

Handsome? Absolutely.

But it's his character that steals the show. 🩶

Where do sessions take place?

I offer photography sessions at a selection of beautiful outdoor locations, including Black Park in Buckinghamshire and The Walled Garden at Dorney.

I also welcome clients to my private Garden Studio in Slough, a peaceful setting designed for relaxed portraits.

If there's a location that holds special meaning for you and your dog, I'd be happy to discuss creating your session there too.

Every location offers something different, but the focus is always the same: creating beautiful photographs that celebrate the bond you share with your dog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be in the photographs too?

Absolutely.

Many people initially book a session because they want beautiful photographs of their dog. But very often, the images they end up treasuring most are the ones that include them too.

There's no pressure to pose or feel self-conscious. My approach is relaxed and natural, focusing on the connection you share rather than creating perfectly posed portraits.

Years from now, these photographs become far more than pictures. They become reminders of muddy walks, wagging tails, familiar routines and the bond that made your dog such an important part of your life.

If you've ever thought, "I'd rather stay behind the camera," I completely understand. But I promise you'll never regret stepping into the frame.

Sometimes the biggest part of creating a finished portrait is what you don't see.

In Tag's original image, a lead and handler were visible, drawing attention away from his striking expression and beautiful mismatched eyes. Through careful editing, the lead has been removed and distractions softened, allowing the focus to rest exactly where it belongs, on Tag.

The transformation is subtle, but it changes the story completely. What begins as a lovely moment on a woodland walk becomes a timeless portrait that celebrates Tag's character and connection.

A glimpse behind the camera

Clients often see the finished photographs, but rarely what goes into creating them.

These behind-the-scenes images were taken during my recent My Dog and Me Sessions at Crocus, while I was photographing dogs and their people among the beautiful gardens.

One of the questions I'm often asked is how I create such natural, connected photographs.

The answer is usually quite simple: patience, observation and finding exactly the right perspective.

More often than not, that means working at a dog's eye level. By getting lower, I can create images that feel more intimate and connected, while making the most of the beautiful surroundings.

The goal is never simply to photograph how a dog looks. It's to capture the relationship they share with the people who love them.

The finished images may feel effortless, but every photograph begins with careful attention to light, composition, expression and connection.

These behind-the-scenes moments offer a small glimpse into the process.

When Blue's mum, Jen, got in touch, she already knew that time with her beautiful boy was something she wanted to treasure.

Blue had been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, but despite everything, he was still enjoying life, still loving his walks and still very much himself. ❤️

That's why sessions like these mean so much to me. They're not just about creating beautiful photographs; they're about preserving the little expressions, the personality, the connection and the everyday moments that make our dogs who they are.

Blue was an absolute joy to photograph. Calm, gentle and incredibly loved.

Looking back through these images and reading Jen's lovely review feels especially poignant now:

"Salli was fantastic to work with. She made both me and my dog, Blue, feel completely at ease and turned the whole shoot into a really enjoyable experience. She has such a great way with dogs and it shows in the photos. Blue's personality shines through in every shot. I'm so pleased with the results and really grateful to have these moments captured so beautifully."

After the session, we even enjoyed tea and cake together while chatting about Blue and all the things that made him special.

Thank you, Jen, for trusting me with these memories. 💛
