There's a particular kind of magic in a day that fights the weather and wins the way. Bella and Dan got married at Doxford Barns on Thursday, tucked into a quiet stretch of Northumberland countryside that I never tire of photographing. The weather , however, had other ideas. Wind picked up, rain came and went, but none of it mattered. Not to them, not to their families, and honestly, not to me either. Some of my favourite images of the day came from an umbrella walk to the lake, the two of them laughing along the way.
Then there was Willow. The couple's Jack Russell, flower collar and all, racing down the aisle. I've photographed hundreds of ring bearers over the years, but watching Dan's face as Willow jumped up to say hello - that's the kind of moment I can't direct; only catch. That's really my whole job as far as I'm concerned. I want my photographs to document the day, the real moments, capturing memories; my photographs are about the day; the day for me isn't just a photoshoot. I'm there to follow it closely enough to catch what is real, those quiet moments between family and friends alongside the fun and laughter. And then, when the light and the venue allow, build something a little more considered; a creative portrait, a silhouette or even a mad few moments with a Champagne Spray.
Two ways of seeing the same day. I love that I get to do both. Congratulations Bella and Dan - thank you for putting your trust in me; wind, rain and all .❤️
