Hope you’re well folks. Just to let you know I’m going to be taking a little bit of time off socials. I need a little reset so I think it’s probably sensible to stay away until I’m back on my feet.

I’ll leave you with the photo I created for the video challenge set me with their Etching Rag paper.

Take care and see you on the flip side. 🤘🏻

Looking to Uist 🧡 This massive cloud is the reason we didn’t get a massive sunset. Still beautiful though!

I think this is my favourite shot from my Skye workshop. Maybe joint top. Quite serendipitous to be honest, and over in a flash. It was our last day and we had a bit of a drive ahead of us. But when I saw this long abandoned church as we drove, I knew I had to photograph it, even if it was a quick shot.

So I pulled the car over. The others didn’t want to get out, so I made it quick, not wanting to steal too much time from them.

I stood at the boot of the car got my camera out of the bag and swapped to my 70-200. I knew I wanted to use the field to create a sense of isolation for the church, perhaps alluding to a cause of its demise. I think it’s the fence that solidifies that feeling of remoteness.

Next time I’m up, I will be spending more time at this spot, although I’m not sure why I could do differently to convey the narrative I was aiming for. The conditions were cold, but perfect, with a vibrant energy emanating from the scene in spite of the dereliction, as if nature was running its course.

It’s so rare that I edit in black and white these days, but I felt it was the only way to effectively distil the structure and form within the framing I chose. What do you think? Does it work?

How’s it going, everyone? I haven’t been posting too much recently and I just kind of wanted to explain why.

If you don’t want to watch the video, I’ll cut a long story short. I’ve been thinking about where sharing my imagery fits on the Internet, and what the impact of that might be, whether it’s an image being scraped for AI purposes, or being seen/not being seen by real people on the Internet. Of course that stretches to my website as well, which has been scraped more times than I can count recently. I’m really big on highlighting the negative ramifications that AI has on copyright and ownership, seeing it as one of the biggest rights erosions in recent times that specifically target a minority industry(creative), but an industry that’s so many rely on. So, I’ve been stuck in a bit of a paradox trying to figure out whether I want to keep sharing work on the Internet or not.

I thought about only sharing crops, I thought about not sharing anything at all, I thought about switching to more BTS/talking head stuff (which I might do anyway), and a few other options, including bottling everything up and keeping it to myself.

However, that is where ideas go to die. I’ve decided that I need to lean in, take the rough with the smooth, and keep sharing, knowing that my next image or idea will probably be better than the last.

Anyway, hope you’re all good. The world seems to be getting crazier by the day, so look after yourselves, and be kind to the people around you. ✌️
