Was fascinating to watch it bob upstream and dipping it's head under the water to catch insect larvae and freshwater shrimp. Tricky to photograph in the low light though

Autumn is now in full swing and it's time to say goodbye to our fluttering fairies for another year.

Sad to see such a decline in butterflies this year, can't help but feel climate change is a major contributing factor with all the wet weather we've had for months...Although that didn't seem to be a problem for this green-veined white that prefers damper conditions. Let's hope 2025 is a bit drier!

The UKs rarest snake... The smooth snake. Can only be found in the heathlands of Dorset, Hampshire, Surrey, and West Sussex.

Priority Species under the UK Post-2010 Biodiversity Framework. Listed as a European Protected Species under Annex IV of the European Habitats Directive.

Fun fact - smooth snakes are our only constrictor snake and non venomous. Whilst the grass snake is also non venomous, they strike at their prey and eat whole whereas the smooth snake will coil around their prey to subdue and crush it.
