Tell me you live by a navy base without telling me...

Featuring the HMS Prince of Wales, which sailed shortly after this photo was taken; HMS Warrior, which is the last battleship from the 1800s still afloat; and the Spinnaker Tower, which was designed in the shape of a sail to reflect the city's naval heritage.

The views from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon make it easy to see how old the natural phenomenon is. The layered colours in the rock formation showcase the different rock beds formed over time - starting with the basement rocks at approximately 1,750 million years old through to the top layer which is expected to be 270 million years old.

And here I was, feeling old for turning 30 tomorrow 😳

San Gimignano after the thunderstorm hit and the skies started to brighten.

San Gimignano is a small medieval walled city in between Florence and Siena in Tuscany which was originally built as a settlement back in the 12th century. The family who owned the settlement originally built 42 towers around the walls, but interestingly this was never designed to be a fortress - these towers housed the family.

In modern day, only 12 towers remain standing.

The Waterfront City from a new angle: Camber Quay.

This area is the oldest of Portsmouth’s commercial docks with roots dating back to 1180, when the owner of a fleet of merchant ships decided the sheltered harbour was the idea location to trade with Normandy.

The change in seasons isn’t as concentrate as it used to be thanks to global warming, but views like this make one thing clear: autumn is here.

But it’s not just our perception of a delay to the autumnal views. A study by Harvard assessed the change in this particular season over a 23-year period. Comparing statistics from the start of the study and the end of it; they found that these colour changes in leaves are taking place 5 days later than they used to.

This is because the red pigmentation in the leaves is caused by the drop in temperatures compared to summer: cooler nights with sunny days. But the weather in Britain this season has gone from heatwave to flash floods to cold snaps, so it’s no wonder it’s taken its time to get these autumnal views!

Lake Montriond is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.

In summer, it’s home to dog walkers, sun bathers, and paddle boarders and in the winter, it’s home to dog walkers and snow lovers as the lake completely freezers over due to cold temperatures and a lack of sunlight able to make its way through the surrounding mountains.

Forget ski slope, this is one of the real beauties of the Chablais Alps 😍

Summer days on the water 👌🏼

The Spinnaker Tower is a prominent landmark in Portsmouth now. Built as part of the Renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour Project launched in 1995, it should have been completed in 2000 to coincide with the millennium (and it was due to be called the millennium tower). Delays to construction meant it that work didn’t start until 2001 which meant completion wasn’t until 2005, but nonetheless it is still a brilliant sight that is visible from 23 miles away and it’s unique sail design reflects Portsmouth’s maritime heritage.

Since opening, it’s received 2.5 million visitors and has been incredibly successful.

It may have taken a while this year, but it looks like spring has finally sprung.

Blossom trees look incredibly pretty and are most common in countries like Japan or China. But here in the UK, we have our fair few too. Most fruiting trees, like cherry trees, rely on insects for pollination. The flowers tend to be sweet smelling, showy and beautiful so insects are aware that nectar is nearby.

Summer evenings in my favourite city on the sea ✨🌊

Founded around 1180 as a small settlement in a corner of Portsea Island, Portsmouth has since grown drastically with its rich naval history and is now known as the Great Waterfront City.

Why would a history buff, who loves the sea and sunsets, want to live anywhere else?! 🤓

Longer days are coming and I am here for them.

Did you know summer is said to have benefits for your mental and physical health? Here are 5 randoms ones:

1. People tend to eat more fruit because it’s refreshing and rising temperatures mean favourite fruits are more easily available.

2. Vitamin D and UV rays can help skin complaints such as acne according to doctors at St Thomas Hospital (London). Although it’s important to still wear SPF and to walk around in summer daylight rather than sitting directly in the sun…

3. Increases agility. Better weather and more daylight hours encourages people to take up more activity than in winter because it is more easily accesible.

4. Reduces migraines according to a study in Canada. The lighter air pressure from the warmer days relives the external pressures that can cause migraines.

5. According to research (although from the Daily Mail and we all know how reliable that is - so maybe take this one with a pinch of salt), summer is said to reduce fatal risks heart attacks. Heart attacks that occurred during the summer within this study, had a 19% higher survival rate than those that occurred in winter.

And let’s not forget the fabulous impact watching sunsets can have on your health. Read some of my older posts for insights into the power of sunsets… 🌄

Cemeteries are often said to be peaceful places for walking, thinking, and of course, grieving. But when people say graveyard, it’s often considered much creepier.

Often used synonymously, the two words actually mean different things. Let’s take a step back through time to the 7th Century, when burials were predominantly organised by the Christian Church. Burying the dead was only allowed on lands owned by the church, and most often surrounding the church. These church yards became full with graves and more colloquially ended up referred to as grave yards, which comes from the Proto- Germanic word, groban, which means “to dig”.

Fast forward to the 18th Century, when the growing population of Europe needed more land to bury their dead. Independent graveyards started to be developed outside of the church as the traditional graveyards no longer had capacity to house the dead.

Looking for a new word to name these larger graveyards, the Old French “cimetiere” was coined, which later became known in English as “cemetery”. The Old French meant “graveyard” and originated from the Greek word “kometerion”, which ultimately means “sleeping place”.
