The little folded hand and squishy cheeks!

This is exactly why newborn photographs hit differently a few months later. When you’re right in the middle of those first weeks, you see your baby every day. You don’t necessarily notice just how quickly those tiny newborn details are changing.

Then one day you look back at a photograph like this and think, were you REALLY ever that small? That’s the bit I’m photographing for.

If you’re expecting, it’s always worth getting your newborn session booked before baby arrives so we can plan everything without adding another job to the newborn haze.

'The one photo i didn't like with D I was in with her, that has now become my favourite photo!'

This is exactly why I actively encourage parents to get in at least 1 photo!

Sometimes I want to create a maternity portrait that feels less like a photograph and more like a piece of art.

Pregnancy gives us such incredible shapes to work with, and with the right pose, light and styling we can create something completely different from the pictures you’ve probably been taking on your phone to document your growing bump.

Those phone pictures matter too, by the way.

But there’s something pretty wonderful about having at least a few where you’re actually IN the photograph rather than standing sideways in front of the bedroom mirror.

If you’re expecting and want to create something a bit different, I’d love to hear your ideas.

You are allowed to book maternity photographs even if pregnancy hasn’t made you feel like some glowing earth goddess.

In fact, I’d argue that might be one of the best reasons to do it.

You might feel tired. Your body might feel unfamiliar. Getting dressed might currently involve assessing what still fits rather than what makes you feel amazing.

Then you step in front of my camera and we create something like this. Good maternity photography isn’t dependent on you knowing how to pose or arriving full of confidence.

That’s what I’m there for.

If you’d love photographs of your pregnancy but feel nervous about actually being photographed, please don’t let that be the thing that stops you.

Can we talk about prints for a minute?

It's easy in this day and age for photos to just live on a phone or a laptop, tucked away in a camera roll between screenshots and voice notes you'll never listen back to. And look, I get it, it's convenient. But I always encourage clients to get at least a few images printed, and here's why.

A photo on a wall gets seen. Every day, without you having to go looking for it. It becomes part of the room, part of the house, part of the everyday backdrop of your family's life. A photo buried in a camera roll, even a beautiful one, often just doesn't get looked at again.

There's also something about a printed piece, whether it's a framed piece, a canvas, or an album you can physically hold, that a screen just can't replicate. It ages well too. Phones get lost, upgraded, or die completely, taking years of photos down with them if they're not backed up properly. A printed piece just sits there, doing its job, for decades.

I always help clients think through this at the viewing appointment, working out what would actually suit their home and how different sizes and styles would look in the space, rather than just handing over a USB and hoping for the best.

If you've got session images sitting unprinted somewhere, it might be worth pulling a few out and finally giving them a home on the wall.

There’s something particularly brilliant about photographing twins because they arrive as a pair, but they’re already completely individual little people.
