So happy to have my fox cub feature in this 😊
First competition I've ever entered a shot into, and a cause I have supported for years.
Calendars will be available from September at the Wosleley Center and the money raised will help fund their vital work in reducing and reversing the downward spiral our nature faces every day.

Haven't shared any of my work on here for quite a while so here's a video of all my shots from 2022 that made it to being processed and posted on Instagram.
Happy New Year all!

Sunrise over Sherbrook Valley, Cannock Chase 19.7.22- the day the UK saw record breaking, unprecedented temperatures reaching above 40Β°c in places.
Now I've never been lucky enough to experience the sunrise over the Serengeti, but I think this was the closest thing I'll have from a mile away from home- just swap the giraffes, elephants and acacia trees for fallow deer, stonechats and silver birches πŸ˜‚

Fluffy little tree potato...aka a Tawny Owl chick.

A friend said they look like fluffy little spuds perched in the trees and I have to agree! πŸ˜¬πŸ˜‚
Watching this fledgling and its sibling over the space of a couple of weeks was such a privilege and something I'm so glad to say I got to do this year. The last time I saw the pair was early one morning as they were being hounded by jays, both of the youngsters were more capable on the wing by this point and could get away from the corvids, especially with the help of their protective parents who would dive over from nearby trees to let the attackers know where to go. I knew as I watched the chicks move further and further away from their safe space that it was most likely the last time I'd see them and I was happy to admire them and not take a single shot on that last encounter, this was taken the previous evening.

The Curious Cub.
Full shot and close crop.

I've been meaning to go and check on some fox dens recently for signs of young, but hadn't managed to until the other night. When I got to the area I checked on a den I know was used last year and although there was signs that it was still being used, there was no activity around.
I thought I might have been too early in the evening so I decided to go and scout out another area. As I was approaching I suddenly saw a blur of orange as four fox cubs ran about, jumping and wrestling with each other.
Employing full stealth mode, I worked out my best route to get a better view without disturbing them, keeping upwind of the young ones and their powerful sense of smell, keeping low and moving slowly, using vegetation to hide behind as I edged closer and closer. A couple of times I stood on a twig by accident and I could see the ears of the cubs prick up for a second or two before another cub would do something distracting and they'd get back to their fun.
After a while of this I managed to find myself a great little viewing spot and even had a tree to sit and lean against.
Keeping my eye on the den entrances I saw something moving off to the side of me, it was one of the cubs, I sat frozen as it walked right passed me within about 4-6 foot away, glancing at me briefly it didn't notice me in all my camo glory.
I watched the cubs for over three hours and it was one of the most uplifting wildlife experiences I've had in such a long time, I'm so glad I forced myself out of the house and can't wait to get back to watch them again.

A Local Wild Red Deer Stag (my new favourite!)
Last week I not only had the pleasure of visiting the deer at Tatton park, but a couple of days later, I had the most amazing time seeing some of the wild red deer who live quite locally to me in Staffordshire.
I was lucky enough to have a friend take me to explore an area that I haven't been to since I was a kid, with the plan to try and track down this stunning stag, whom he has photographed many times over the years, and I have heard many stories about. Seeing the red deer was something I have wanted to do for years and years and I was made up at getting to see them at Tatton, although theyre not wild there, and it made me even more eager to see the wild ones in their natural habitat.
So when my friend exclaimed "he's over there" I was seriously excited and couldn't believe how quickly he'd found him (he does know his red deer mind you!) So we made our way to where this guy and his hinds were and watched as they grazed away in the drizzly weather.
To me the experience of getting to admire these animals in their natural homes is such a privilege and one I'm so very grateful for, as nothing can beat an animal in the wild in my eyes 😊
I'll always love the fallow deer that I get to see on a regular basis, but I have a new found love for their red haired cousins- might be a ginger thing πŸ˜¬πŸ˜‚- And this guy is just something else with his bent tine and cute wonky lip πŸ₯ΊπŸ˜πŸ˜ such similar, but also completely different animals they're both amazing in their own ways and it's wonderful to be in the company of them 😊
And a big thank you to my friend who took me to meet him πŸ˜πŸ‘

Gorgeous Mr Greenfinch.
Greenfinches are about the size of house sparrows. Males are dull-olive green with greenish-yellow on the breast and rump, and have bright yellow wing flashes. Females are duller in appearance, with less yellow in their plumage. Juveniles are paler overall, and have streaked plumage.
This exquisite, colourful buddy was a right little chunk with feathers, next to another Greenfinch he seemed HUGE! No wonder he sat, perched on the branch looking as happy as can be!

Red Deer Stag at Tatton Park in very moody conditions.
Last Friday I had the absolute pleasure in visiting my first 'deer park'- Tatton Park.
I have only ever been around wild deer before so to be around so many, more tame animals was incredible, but very different for me.
As soon as my friend and I approached the area where the deer were congregating, we had a rather large red stag- very much like this one- come sauntering over to us, it held its head down low, and I will admit I was a little nervous as its antlers were HUGE, and nuzzled my hand which was down to my side. I got to stroke it's nose for a few seconds before it turned its head and nearly wiped my friend clean out with those massive antlers!
I couldn't get over how different the park deer are, walking so close by to us and not being bothered one bit.
It was also so interesting to see red deer again as I haven't seen one since I was a child. And then to see them up close to fallow deer and to be able to see the physical differences in size, stature, and behaviour was very interesting too.
The weather was absolutely horrendous, snow, hail, sleet, strong winds and even thunder and lightning(!) I started to turn blue at one point- making me look like a co**se apparently πŸ₯Ά- it was that cold!

A lovely local young wild buck basking in the October sunshine.

As you can see by the colour of the bracken in the background, this image was taken before the oranges of autumn had appeared.
This youngish fallow buck was wandering around on his own keeping his distance from the rutting grounds, where at the time, it was all kicking off.

Doe and mini doe in the last rays of the evening sun.
Taken at the end of November.
I followed this pair for a little while as we all made our way in the same direction. The area that we were is full of fruit trees such as crab apples and pears and now and again they'd stop to have a snuffle around on the ground beneath the fruiting trees, and see if there was any delicious morsels to eat on their short journey to join back up with their herd. The sun was warm, golden and low and it was a really peaceful walk as I made my way home, bumping into many more deer as I went.

The young buck on the right, has got quite a nasty injury unfortunately, which he sustained during an attack by a dog. I'd seen him a week before in a different area and his limp was really quite a bad one, making him lurch forward with every step. It looked painful as me and a friend watched him walking with a young Pricket. They had a little practice headlock and then carried on walking and so did we.
I heard that the rangers knew about this buck and have administered antibiotics to him. 6 days later- wednesday, when this pic was taken, he was still limping but not as bad as before which certainly is a good sign for him. He's a handsome young lad so here's hoping he heals well and doesn't have to go through something like this again.
