Today...
Today marks one year since I last posted on my business Instagram page. However you look at it, there will always be mixed feelings toward social media. Anyone who knows me and my business knows how much I harp on about how essential it is. So, why am I such a hypocrite? Why do I work in an industry that relies so heavily on social media but don’t use it for my own business nearly as much as I should? The short answer: it’s HARD.
I’m certain that 99% of people in creative fields, whether that’s photographers, videographers, designers, copywriters, social media marketers, or content creators will agree that while trying to support other businesses in a highly competitive world, the one that often suffers the most is our OWN. My feelings about this? It’s okay. It’s okay to normalise the feeling of being overwhelmed or having things go wrong. It’s okay to not have your portfolio as up-to-date as it could be. It’s okay to miss out on a job or contract you really wanted. And it’s okay to fail. Believe it or not, there are many others in exactly the same boat. By sharing this pressure and talking to others, you’ll realise just how many people feel the same way.
To all my friends and colleagues, no matter the industry creative or not - it is not easy to manage the workload, both in your career and in life. And again, that’s okay. Take the time to step away when you need to. Don’t feel like you need to self-inflict more stress by trying to find the time to post or tactically plan your next upload. Take a moment to see friends and family and reconnect with the real world. While I won’t be staying off Instagram for another year, I’ll be doing my best to take my own advice—knowing when to post and when to take a break.
The support I’ve received in my career from my family, friends, and clients has been nothing short of incredible. I owe so much to the opportunities I’ve been given, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without all of you. So thank you. Your continued support truly means everything to me.
Love,
Stuart ❤️
