Boots has become the first community pharmacy in the UK to transport prescription-only medicines using drones. The application of drone technologies across multiple industries is growing at a rapid pace! 🏎

The largest delivery Boots has been able to complete so far weighs 85kg. Boots are currently investigating how much time the application of these aircrafts will save and how they can be incorporated into the wider medical supply chain to create economic efficiencies.

"Drones have huge potential in the delivery of medicines and it is incredibly exciting to be the first community pharmacy in the UK to transport them in this way. An island location like the Isle of Wight seemed like a sensible place to start a trial of drones and their value to the delivery of medicines to more remote locations is very clear."

There are so many organisations across the world that are very near the official launch of eVTOL air taxis. The most recent company that has completed its second phase of testing is an aircraft developer Archer Aviation based in California.

With that battery of tests behind them, Archer’s technical team will now commence the final phase of the eVTOL’s test flights. Advanced assessment flights have continued of late at a rate of one per day! 🤯

The community of micro explorers within this area are completely overwhelmed with the progress that is being made! There is a race between a lot of big players to be the first to develop a fully functioning eVTOL aircraft.

Agricultural drones have become a huge business for DJI. The tech giant has been adding at least two new precision farming drones to its product portfolio every year since 2019. It’s known that DJI pilots completed agricultural missions covering a total of 66.7 million hectares of farmland in 2021 alone. 🤯

Legal authorities in the UK are moving to review existing laws regulating the aviation space to evaluate whether or not current guidelines are best suited for newly emerging kinds of transportation, services, increased automation being provided by drones and advanced air mobility.

It poses the question is this a good or bad thing for drone operators? 👇

Well the Law Commission doesn't seem to be reviewing measures to make thinks more difficult, in fact... they are undertaking the review to see what current UK aviation regulation needs to be loosened or amended to ensure Drone and AAM companies can reach their full economic potential.

“Automation is already heavily used in aviation today, but recent breakthroughs have seen the development of new, innovative autonomous and highly automated systems and vehicles,” the Law Commission’s announcement read.

“These include drones, as well as advanced air mobility vehicles, such as electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, which can provide short journeys for a small number of people… Increased automation has the potential to deliver substantial benefits to the entire aviation system, UK industry, and the public. To realise these benefits, the UK’s legislative and regulatory framework needs to be sufficiently agile to facilitate innovation, whilst robust enough to maintain the high safety standards that aviation enjoys.”

The work surrounding aerial mobility (AAM) vehicles is ever expanding and becoming more interesting by the day! We recently discussed the consortium being formed to create an entire UK AAM ecosystem. Today we're showcasing the work Microsoft has been doing with their new project AirSim 🎆

"Project AirSim is a result of five years of research and experimentation into deep learning and AI. While the earlier open-source research project is being retired, Microsoft said learnings from the same have inspired the launch of this new end-to-end platform that would allow AAM customers to test and train AI-powered aircraft in simulated 3D environments more easily."

Incredible work and truly inspiring! This will help developers understand, test, and design tangible solutions for their customers.

We recently purchased the Mini 3 Pro and can safely say its improved battery life, upgraded imaging and visual sensing system and intelligent features make it the best sub-250 gram DJI drone to date. ✅

Developing a sub-250 gram drone comes with it's benefits including the workaround of the current drone laws stipulated here in the UK but 'the tradeoff for the Mini 3 Pro came in the form of an internal cooling fan that the team had to replace to reduce the overall load. There were other advantages too; not having a built-in fan would effectively reduce the drone’s power consumption and increase its battery life' 🔋🏋️

"Bottom line? Some overheating is a slight tradeoff for a sub-250-gram drone whose feature-set includes 4K/60fps video, ActiveTrack, tri-directional obstacle sensing, and 90-degree gimbal rotation to shoot high-quality vertical images for social media."

On July 18th a consortium was formed by UK aviation giants to test and prepare the launch of electric takeoff and landing services, like air taxis which would be the WORLDS FIRST fully advanced air mobility(AAM) ecosystem based here in the UK 🇬🇧

The consortium is made up of Vertical Aerospace, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Skyports. The group will be operating from a $11.2 million grant and accelerated by a further $6million provided by consortium members. 💵

Their work will see them focus on technological developments in aircraft electrification, airspace management, ground infrastructure, operational procedures and 'the systems and supporting business cases that are required to implement a new model of aerial passenger transport'.

“Just as airports are critical to commercial aeroplane travel, vertiports are critical to AAM,” said Skyports CEO Duncan Walker. “Our Living Lab will be a central component of the consortium, enabling Skyports and partners to demonstrate end-to-end operations and test the complexities of developing a commercially viable AAM network in the UK.”

The new UK AAM consortium is expected to continue its developmental work for an initial period of two years, with the Heathrow air taxi trials expected before the end of 2024.

The world of travel in 2 to 3 years time may be a completely different outfit all together.
