My favourite shots of 2024 ๐Ÿ“ธ

This was my first full year with my drone, and I sure got some good use out of it - mostly for the photos of lighthouses. Itโ€™s also been great to realise that my Nikon still has plenty of uses, particularly in the two spectacular solar storms we experienced this year and the incredible auroras they created ๐Ÿ˜

Iโ€™m excited to see what 2025 has in store!

Also, my 2025 calendars are now 20% off until the end of January when Iโ€™ll take them offline, forever!

To celebrate Welsh Dark Skies Week, here are some of my favourite photos of Walesโ€™ incredible night sky ๐ŸŒŒ ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ

It never ceases to amaze me just how many stars I can see right on my doorstep!
Iโ€™ve got some great photos in the Bannau Brycheiniog / Brecon Beacons, as well as my favourite one ever of the Elegug Stacks on the Pembrokeshire Coast - I guess just I need to get some in Eryri / Snowdonia to complete all three national parks! The Gowerโ€™s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is definitely a good spot too ๐ŸŒŒ

A couple of weeks ago, on the hottest day the UK has ever had, I went for a swim in the sea to cool off. After the sun had set we waited around to see if we could spot any of the bioluminescent plankton known to appear in this area after hot weather. Unfortunately, I didnโ€™t spot any, but I managed to get some decent (albeit unexpected) Milky Way shots! I like how the sea has calmed through the long exposure and the Milky Way aligns almost perfectly with the ridge of the hill ๐ŸŒŒ

Flags are quite cool, huh? Almost random patterns on fabric that somehow bring about so many emotions in people - I certainly feel a sense of delight when I see Y Ddraig Goch flying high ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ
As part of this unifying spell that flags cast upon us, they remind us where we are, and whoโ€™s in charge here. This is no more true than in Chile, where around a third of the countryโ€™s population lives in or around the capital city of Santiago - much of the rest of the country is either the arid Atacama or piercingly chilly (or Chile!) Patagonia - so having the flag fly high above these remote places can still encourage that sense of shared identity, especially in the earlier times of a young country like Chile, where the quest for territorial expansion and nation-building was significant.
I quite like the Chilean flag, it is simple but unique (other than its striking but entirely coincidental similarity to the Texan flag!), and as far as we know its origin derives from the Mapuche depiction of the โ€œmorning starโ€ or, as we now know it, the planet Venus, which is a nice touch.
One of my favourite ever flags is actually that of the Magellanes Region in the south of Chile, but thatโ€™s another story.
Whatโ€™s your favourite flag, and why?

The Day Isnโ€™t Over Just Because The Sunโ€™s Gone Down ๐Ÿœ

Do you ever find that sometimes a photo you take in a rush, on a whim, ends up being one of your best?
This is the case for me with this photo - I had just watched the sun set over Valle de la Luna, a desert valley in the Atacama in Chile. As I walked back to the car to leave, I saw the a perfect shot lining up - all the other cars and minibuses full of tourists were on their way out of the car park, and the dusky lighting was just right for light trails, so I grabbed my tripod and quickly snapped a 70-second exposure of all the vehicles on their way out along the dusty desert track. You can tell I was in a rush to capture the moment as I didnโ€™t even get a chance to fully extend my tripod! That said, I like the low angle viewpoint and the detail it captures in the illuminated rocks and sand on the track.
