Christmas Eve many years ago I found myself at Cardiff Central before dawn. If memory serves I was on call for the adjacent area and due to crew shortages the ‘ boat train ‘ from Swansea to London Paddington was single manned. The first Swansea to Paddington is / was one of a small number of trains that has to have two Guards due to regular unsociable behaviour issues. Thus I joined at Cardiff as the second person for the Cardiff to London leg.
