The railway between Abergavenny-Brynmawr presented a lot of challenges during its construction in the 1850s and early 1860s cutting into the hills by Clydach gorge and tunnelling bores into rock several times. When it closed in 1958 everything apart from the structures were removed, today the tunnels and key supports are all that remain as the old trackbed is now being used as a public footpath.

Gelli Felen railway tunnels - The Merthyr, Tredegar & Abergavenny Railway (1862-1958) a unique pair of tunnels in the Welsh hills.

The first tunnel which is 352 yards long and completed in 1862, opened with the railway line cutting through some challenging terrain along the Abergavenny-Brynmawr section and climbs up to 1000 feet making it one of the steepest stretches of railway in the UK at the time.

A second tunnel was constructed directly adjacent to the original bore in 1877 when the line was doubled using slightly different materials and slightly shorter by a few meters. A pair of adits were made to connect the two tunnels together.

Regular trains ran until the start of 1958 and the line closed that year. An incredible piece of engineering now sitting abandoned used as a shortcut for what is now the foot and cycle path that runs along most of the old railway line.

Allt-y-Cefn Tunnel - The Carmarthen and Cardigan Railway (1860-1952)

This tunnel is a feature along the old branch line which was meant to connect the two towns in its title, but never happened due to financial issues. Trains began operating on the line from 1860.

The 167 yard tunnel opened in 1864 near the old Pontre Court platform, this 153 metre structure is a curved build with horseshoe shaped portal entrances lined with brick and masonry.

Passenger trains ceased in 1952 and goods trains followed 20 years later in 1973, since then the tunnel and the line were left abandoned after the track was ripped up a few years later. The tunnel itself is still in very good condition and very dry inside with the remains of old cable posts along the walls.

On a bit of an exploring break but I was along the Exe estuary by Cockwood and luckily the tide was out revealing a shipwreck known as “The South Coaster” that’s been sitting there since 1961.

The ship was built in 1944 as a coastal freighter transporting goods across the UK and is about 150 feet long and weighed about 450 tonnes.

One day we will be able to properly document the wreck as I wasn’t quite geared up to venture to it despite other explorers wondering around it on the day.

A revisit to the disused and mothballed Heathfield railway line that was last used in 2015 .

It dates back to 1874 and used for passenger and freight until 1959 when Heathfield station along with other stations on the line closed. Since then it was purely used for goods well into the 21st century.

In late 2024 during intense flooding a large portion of the track not far from Newton Abbot was washed away leaving it suspended in the air for a brief period before being removed leaving the track completely disconnected.
