Yay! I remembered to do the 2nd Friday Faves. ๐ŸŽ‰ We're off to a good start but I'm sure I'll forget in the future. ๐Ÿ˜†

This photo is from Sarah & Jorge's wedding at the beautiful Tavistock Town Hall.

It's not often that I post black and white photos - I embrace colour in my work and it feels more 'on brand' to share colour images online.
But I do deliver every single photo in both black and white and colour to my clients, so if you're a fan of monochrome then fear not. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, why do I love this photo? Well, it's full of emotion. In the foreground, the Bride and Groom are beaming with happiness. And in the background, the Groom's sister, shedding happy tears. ๐Ÿฅฒ

In my early days of wedding photography, I don't think I looked beyond the Bride and Groom as much as I should have. The couple marrying were the focus of most photos, but throughout my 14 year career, I learned to look beyond. To find the story.

Jorge's family flew over from Spain for the wedding day - they don't see each other often and it meant so much to everyone, to all be celebrating together. This photo shows that story. โค๏ธ

Friday Faves - I just came up with this, let's see if I actually keep up with it every week. ๐Ÿ˜…

My favourite photos are rarely posed, polished, portraits, confetti or sparkler shots that look like they wouldnโ€™t look out of place in a magazine or a wedding venue brochure.

The photos I love are the ones that tell a story. And this one is a firm favourite of mine because of the different layers of stories within it.

I love how the 'Wed2B' dress bag almost looks like an extension of the dress. Almost like she's popping out from it, transforming from woman to Bride.

I love the positioning of the hands - the way the Mother of the Bride's hands frame her daughter, and the Bride's crossed hands reaching for the ceiling.

I love the 'wedding morning' scene, with hair spray, shoes, tea and coffee.

I love the expression on the flower girl's face. ๐Ÿคฃ

Vouge style images will 'wow' us all in the first second. But documentary photography often requires us to stop and look a bit longer, to find these layers of storytelling and to appreciate the beauty in ordinary things (yes this is a quote from The Office USA ๐Ÿ˜…).

Here's some previews from this amazing wedding at Wembury! ๐Ÿ’™

Never before, in my 14 years my of photographing weddings, had I seen a zip line AND an obstacle course!! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ I was in my element photographing everyone (including the Bride and Groom) reliving their childhood. There was also a little park area with swings and a slide. How awesome is that? To have these things available at your wedding venue!

But the fun and games didn't end there - because they also had lawn games like 'bag toss' and a few very energetic games of rounders!
Then, pantomime style speeches and a Ceilidh band for the evening, which was the perfect way to round off an action packed day!

But there's one photo in this collection that I really want to talk about. A moment when 'wedding day' and 'real life' crossed over. The Bride and Groom, queuing for their burger, the Bride showing her wedding ring to a guest while they wait to be served. And then just behind the food tent, a lady from the public was collecting her parcel from the Scan Tap & Go. ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ‘Œ

If you're in any doubt as to the kind of wedding photographer I am, this photo says it all. It's already up there with some of my favourite photos I've ever taken. I love this more than all the beautiful portraits - more than every Vouge image combined. Because any photographer can pose, direct and orchestrate, but it takes a special eye, and appreciation of beauty in ordinary things to be a documentary photographer. ๐Ÿ“ท

Last night I finally finished editing this gorgeous wedding from March.

Yes that's right, it was almost 10 weeks ago...

But I don't use AI to edit my galleries in a matter of minutes, I like to put my care and attention into the editing process.
Also, life has been an absolute whirlwind for me recently (which I've alluded to in a few random posts here and there) and as a result of that, I've lost countless hours of work/editing time over the last month or so. ๐Ÿ˜•
Lastly, this gallery was a HUGE collection to edit through and Roz and Matt have received over 1000 photos from me from this incredible day - I was with them for about 13-14 hours on the day after all.

I should add also that they've not waited this long before seeing anything at all. They had their previews after the wedding and they've received batches of photos throughout - with their last batch sent last night. ๐Ÿ˜‰

In this day and age, we're all photographers - we have cameras on our phone and it's such an easy and instant thing for us to all enjoy. But professional wedding photography (and videography I should add) is different, it's a process, it's hours of unseen work before and after the wedding. And I love every stage of that process - even when it takes me almost 10 weeks. ๐Ÿ˜…

Time for another self portrait. I made this one in April 2023 and called it 'Don't Burn Out'. And the irony is, I did burn out during the process of making it. It was much more challenging than I thought it would be and it resulted in a ridiculous amount of photoshop layers that weren't organised very well. It was utter chaos and I remember feeling physical hurt after being hunched over my screen for hours, trying to get that waxy look. ๐Ÿ•ฏ
It honestly p*sses me off that AI would make this in seconds now. It's probably even analysing my painstaking work as a reference to do so. ๐Ÿซ 

But alas, today's post isn't about AI.
The other week I said that I was going to start sharing some of my self portrait art on this profile and this image speaks to me now more than it ever has.

I feel that flame.

It's been sizzling away for a while and I'm very aware that I'm 'burning out'. The last month or so has been full on for me and my family. Life has been throwing curveballs- as it does with us all at different chapters of our lives.

But I'm hopeful that things are going to get easier soon and I'm working on 'filling my cup'; so I can keep pouring my energy, love, time, etc into all the places that need it.

Why say this? Why show weakness online? Especially as a business person!! Are you mad Leah??

Well, I just want to be real with people.

ALWAYS.

I want to work with clients who will let me in, bring their guard down and be themselves.
Clients who know they don't have to perform to my camera all day long. So I can capture treasured moments in my documentary, storytelling way. ๐Ÿ“–

How can I ask you to let me in, if I'm not real with you?

I made this art.

It was challenging to create, but I got there.

Three years on, it's resurfaced in my memory and it's connecting with me on a deeper level now.

I'm sharing this visual metaphor with you and talking about the feeling it's giving me in this tougher chapter of my life.

Sometimes weddings have stories within them - this wedding had a few (I'll get around to sharing them all eventually).

For now though, I'm excited to share this collection of bemused stares, from the Best Man at Beth & Dom's wedding.

It was an unspoken little game that him and I played all day. He was completely natural around me and my camera for 90% of the day - just enjoying the celebrations but the other 10% of the time he'd just look straight down the lens with this wide-eyed expression - then laugh and carry on with the day. We barely spoke, we just did this all day. And it was amazing! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜† I kept them all in the collection - 13 in total. ๐Ÿ‘ŒWhat a ledge!
