Downpour - Haldon Forest, Devon taken on Saturday 29th August 2026.

As a large band of rain swept over Devon for the first time in a long time, I headed towards Haldon in the dark.

After nearly two hours of trying to make things work, they weren't. I could see from my rain app it would soon be coming to an end. I headed for this location and set up the camera in hope.

Under my umbrella things were obvious...I needed some atmosphere to lift the scene. The rain began to intensify and it brought just a little light fog. After five minutes things had changed completely.

I had to remove the umbrella from the tripod due to what had become a downpour shaking the camera. Now I needed three hands to hold the umbrella, dry the lens and take the shot. I managed it with two.

Dark - first light Haldon Forest, Devon taken on Saturday 22nd August 2026.

I made it to this location just as the dawn chorus was at it's peak. It was still very dark under the canopy of the large beech trees.

Beyond this line of beeches there is a more open pine section of the forest. What little light there was lit the scene beautifully, including the fallen leaves.

Lucky it was completely calm, so I didn't need to worry about swaying branches with my ten second exposure.

The weather has now broken and I was up in the forest again yesterday making the most of the misty conditions. Yesterday's pictures to follow shortly.

Scouting Picture - Haldon Forest 2025

I took this scouting picture last September just as the first signs of Autumn were approaching. I did return in October, but the scene was very bare and I was too late.

I intend to concentrate solely on this area of the forest this Autumn, which is also close to the pines I scouted recently.

The added bonus is there are also some giant beech trees. Bring on the colour and the conditions 🤞

An update - you may be asking yourself "David, where are all the new pictures?". It would be a fair question.

This year has been difficult and very busy. Unfortunately, my photography has been the one thing I had to put to one side.

I have been demolishing the garden shed and then rebuilding a new one from scratch with my son Billy. More recently there has been scaffolding at the rear whilst I am decorating the outside.

The scaffolding should be gone soon, the shed is finished and if this hot weather ever decides to stop...the photography can start. If I haven't been painting or knocking in nails, then the bonsai's have needed constant watering.

Roll on stormy seas, mist, fog, rain and more English weather. Sorry if you have missed my work. Stay cool ❄️❄️❄️

It's looking like Autumn in my local park, worryingly. Two months early and some very large trees are already dropping their leaves.

Forgotten - foggy morning Haldon Forest, Devon taken on Sunday 22 September 2024.

There has never been a morning before or since this one where I ended up with eight pictures I was really happy with.

This one is the last of the eight and was miss filed on my computer and only recently discovered again.

I parked almost beside this scene on first arrival, but it was too dark for the camera to focus. I ended up circling back to the spot just as the light began to break through the fog.

The draw of this scene was the overhanging beech branches holding onto it's green leaves ahead of Autumn.

Scouting Haldon Forest, Devon - July 2026

After days of sun and clear skies, a little fog was forecast. I headed out at 5am and you can guess the rest...no fog.

I switched to scouting a new part of the forest I had never been before. I was there for a couple of hours and captured these images focusing on the path as a lead through the picture.

I'll return in Autumn and Winter to see how the scenes have changed and hopefully improve on these pictures.

Change - Haldon Forest, Devon

Last year I took these two pictures of the same scene.

The first picture was taken on the 15th August as Summer was coming to an end. The second picture was taken on the 25th October in the height of Autumn colour.

I remember returning at the start of November to try and better the Autumn shot, but an evening of strong winds had virtually stripped the trees of leaves.

I think I will return here in Winter and Spring to try and complete the set.

Calm morning - Teign Estuary, Dolphin Court, Shaldon across to Teignmouth, South Devon taken on Wednesday 25th February 2026.

Over the years of photographing this area I have looked at this scene, but I have never been able to capture anything I am happy with. That still remains the case.

Upon arrival a complex set of conditions were all in place. The Estuary like glass, no boats obstructing the foreground and high clouds. This picture was taken half an hour before sunrise just as things began to change.

The high clouds that I hoped would catch colour began to disappear. By sunrise the sky was virtually clear and the shot was gone. I quite like this moody version, but hope for something better in the future.

Renewal - early morning Haldon Forest, Devon taken on Saturday 30th May 2026.

I don't fully understand the management of forests, but I know that when the men finish their "work" Nature takes over.

This area of the forest was "worked" probably three years ago. Prior to the work it was very dense and overgrown. I have avoided this area as it looked...well...hacked.

However, given passage of time and alot of Nature's magic... look at it now. The only tricky part of this picture was ensuring I didn't disturb numerous bees going about their early morning work.🐝🐝🐝
