I sometime sit and wonder why I’m really drawn to dark moody scenes; is it a sign of my personality, or the colour of my soul? Those who know me well know I’m a light hearted, fun and bubbly character with probably too much energy, the kind of energy only a 5 year old child can keep up with; but there’s a darker side I rarely speak of. I’ve been through a lot more than your average 38 year old and sometimes that shows…photography has helped shift focus and become a calmer, more peaceful version of myself. The art of patience hasn’t slipped me past either, now spending much of my spare time sat in nature is a blessed experience!

The edit; annoyingly I’m not very good at dark moody edits which is somewhat ironic as it has to be one of my favourite genres to look at. However, I feel this has to be one of my favourite moody edits to date. There is a significant skill level to editing mood; and that skill passes me by, many will probably say this isn’t even that moody, and I don’t disagree, but in time I hope to improve 🙏🏻

Have you ever seen a Highland coo jump? Well i haven’t, so i was pretty stunned to see this not so little hairy horned cutie jump between some raised rocks 😳! Not only was it the height and gap that shocked me, which were several feet; however he chose to make this jump only several feet away from me which really made it feel like a close miss to be honest as the thud of the landing went straight through my chest 😳

Clear blue sky sunrises and peak heather conditions - 2026. The heather has turned since my visit, so that’s it for another year! Last year I failed to make it for peak heather so I was happy to have made it this year; and thankfully had a good amount of time there too 🙌🏻

I think most people I met along the way said the heather would have been better if there had been more rain 🤷🏻‍♂️ - so maybe I will look forward to the possibility of that in the future!

Highland coo’s in heather seems to be on everyone’s priority list of images to capture and for good reason! What a spectacle it is to see these large beautiful creatures in such scenery!

The first image is of an adult confidently striding through the scene, nothing fazing them, direction of travel confirmed; whilst the second is a very young highland coo hiding in between the rocks; a quick side-eye and they were gone!

I’ve taken a bit of creative licence with these and given them a soft, bright, grainy look. Taken at f2.8 on my 16-35mm during the mid day sun, the images were so sharp and the colours were so rich I felt this was the perfect way to dial that back a little and create a softer portrait style image. This isn’t my usual type of edit but I really like it for these images - let me know what you think in the comments below, do you think I made the right decision?

So here is the image from night before last. The dark moody skies and strong sun makes for a stark contrast which I absolutely adore! The sun hit for a matter of seconds, so much so I only got one image where the whole scene was lit! The dark cloud passed through the scene and was then gone, so I got super lucky with this image 🙌🏻

The second image is of a fallen tree which some may remember I took a hand held image of some time ago and said I wanted to focus stack it. Well here is said focus stacked image under reflected golden glow from the sky. There is significant depth to this image and took 10 images to successfully focus stack the image. I love all of the burls and burl-like growths, combined with knots and heavily distorted wood grain which flow like a wave from one side of the image to the other.
