Blackmagic have released the finished version of DaVinci Resolve 21 - it is no longer beta. This beta period was quite a bit shorted than the previous years, which is nice. I have been using the beta for a while with no problems and have not had any with the new versions. This does not mean it is perfect - everything has bugs and there is so much in Resolve there is going to be a problem somewhere - but I think it is working well. It will over write your existing version of Resolve and upgrade any projects you open so you cannot go back to version 20, of course.

I just uploaded a short video on how I do regular backups of my important data using a program called "freefilesync". Backing up files is staggeringly important so please do it. I find this simple free program takes most of the effort out of it for me. I can clone everything on a drive to another drive or directory and then just ipdate the backup if the original changes in a couple of clicks.

I have just uploaded a short video on using DaVinci Resolve 21s speech generator, which came in pretty helpful for me in a recent project.
With this you can clone someone's voice and get it to read whatever you type. The great thing is you can make lots of variations and choose one that sounds the closest to your needs.
Useful for replacing dialogue you did not get properly at the time or even just trying to replace a garbled word or two in your recording. You can watch the video here:

I just uploaded a video about what was new in EDIUS 11.5 which was recently released. The big new thing was speech to text using AI which lets you make subtitles and add markers with everything said on to video.
EDIUS 11.5 could do this using the bundled acoustica or using the free add-on, BAT server. However now Grass Valley have built this into EDIUS natively.

Adobe were showing off their new colour mode for Premiere Pro at NAB. If you have an Adobe subscription you can try it out in the beta version now. It has "redesigned colour grading" according to the hype and I have yet to get to grips with it. However I did notice one thing on installing the beta version on my old laptop. Premiere said "you are installing on Windows 10 and this o/s is not longer supported. Future versions will not even install on Windows 10".
Obviously, Windows 10 is on its way out but this is the first I have heard of someone choosing to block installing their program on Windows 10.

So NAB is just about here and people are announcing all their new stuff. Blackmagic released their usual long videow ith details of all their new stuff which you can see here: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/
The section on Resolve is about 1hr 38 mins in. Resolve 21 include lots of new AI stuff as well as loads of small and welcome improvements. The biggest change is the addition of a Photo page so you can now edit photos in Resolve, as well as video, audio and compositing. I have not used any of these new features yet - the public beta version is out now so any of us could do so - but it all looks very interesting.
The update is still free - once again they mention they may charge for it sometime - but it is still free for users of the normal and studio versions with V21.

Vegas Pro has changed hands again. Known for years as Sony Vegas, it was sold to Magix some years ago and has now moved again and been bought by Boris.
The new additions now that it is owned by Boris seem to be some Boris plugins being include - title studio, for example.
Boris also bought Sound Forge and Acid Pro.
Vegas can either be rented or bought - if you rent you get some extra bits with it. Vegas is £170 for the standard version and £230 for a version with some extra plug-ins for a perpetual licence. Sound Forge is actually more expensive at £230 for the standard version.

I just published a video about AI upscaling with a free option call Flash VSR. This one is fairly easy to set up and does a pretty good job.
This will be borken into two videos - this one shows the installing and basic used plus some results. The second video, which should be out on the next day or so, will look more indepth into the settings and compare the results from this free program to those in my preffered upscaler - Topaz Video. I have just uploaded the 3rd part of my series on BAT server 2. This one covers the new text to speech options - where you can get EDIUS to read out some words for you in different ways, and even get it to translate your audio from another language into English, plus the AI upscaling and some other options.
The AI upscaling results may not show up too well on the video after YouTube has mangled it but at the very least you can try them out for yourself. After all BAT server is free as long as you own EDIUS 11.
