Team France 🇫🇷 Arundel International Joust Part 2 Shots from the final day. You can really see, just how it meant to Luc Petillot to win the Individual Champion award.

The Hummingbird Hawk-Moth. There’s been a noticeable rise in numbers in the UK this year. I captured these images today, from a fleeting moment, as it was feeding in the evening Sun. I couldn’t quite decide on the best crop or even which image to lead with, hence the number of similar shots.

Following on from last weeks close encounter with this Heron, I never expected to get any closer… then this happened. The same Heron, on the Causeway, perched by The Great Water at Leeds Castle. It was completely unfazed by me standing behind it. I managed to get as close to 3 meters away and needed to zoom out, I was that close. An extraordinary encounter for me. Considering how reserved Herons are, I couldn’t quite believe it. It even crouched down for a rest.

Maybe I was seeing in real time how the heat is affecting our wildlife. Perhaps this Heron had little energy to waste in the heat, jumping at the first sight of a human. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Whatever the reason, it was an encounter I’ll never forget.

I was keen to post this last week on International Cat Day but it slipped my mind. Felt it was only fair to acknowledge it having 5 of them under my roof. So ladies and gents, here’s his lordship, Milo, being a model for me when I had an itchy trigger finger 📸📸. Cameo from Monty.

A Stock Dove and Wood Pigeon at the Kent Reflection Pool Hide.
Pigeon’s eyes are fascinating to me. They just don’t look real! Like the plastic button eyes you find on kids toys. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Although common, it was the first time I’d captured a Stock Dove. Beautiful colour and iridescent markings.

In recent weeks the Castle Island has turned Canadian 🇨🇦 Canada Geese have made themselves at home in numbers. I felt a national anthem was in order, either that or Bryan Adams (just a fan, I’m aware there’s many more Canadian artists to choose from). Obviously, there isn’t an actual Canadian Flag flying over the castle.

More Arundel International Joust Pictures.

The tournament wouldn’t be the same without the fantastic displays from Kevin, Max and of course the amazing birds of prey of Hawking About At least 12 displays were put on over the tournament, including one-to-ones as featured here with Perla Andersen. Superb effort.

Birds featured:

Male Barn Owl - Buzbee
Female Lanner Falcon - Halo
Female Harris Hawk - Aimee
Male Gyr x Peregrine Falcon - Mojo

I seem to be seeing Herons all the time of late, and there will be more images to come! This Heron was by the Mote on the Castle Island. Having only a 70-200mm in hand and on the other side of the Mote, I thought I’d lost my chance to 📸. I tried my luck though and went onto the Island to walk around behind it. My luck was in, despite it noticing I was there, this Heron wasn’t phased at all, and I spend half an hour watching it fish. It pulled off 1 catch through weeds, a testament to their incredible eyesight. Remarkably, days later, I’d end up even closer to this Heron. Pictures to follow next week…

I’d shelved these 2 shots for a few months now. I wasn’t quite happy with the background. It’s the same Nuthatch and branch for both images. I felt they weren’t exposed right and the shed in the corner of the image hampered the composition. One of them flagged as a featured photo on my phone, and thought I’d have another crack at them. I was pleasantly surprised by the detail revealed when I made the images look colder, particularly the first shot. I guess it’s always worth a second look with a fresh perspective.
