Hi all below is my review of the upcoming album by Jo Ash, fab for me her best yet 😊
and looking forward to seeing her perform live at this years Napton Festival
Jo Ash - One Way Mirror (album out 12th June)
Yet another fab release from Jo that throws in a few surprises, as always great lyrics, fine vocals and musicianship and for me her finest album yet, (a lot of competition there) with such diverse material and plenty of tunes in her own unique style.
The surprises include opener ‘Wrote You A Song’ which has a light, breezy country feel with excellent guitar work by Mike Wheatley, and ‘Astronaut’ a electric pop style number with a great groove full of multi-layered delight.
Plenty in her unique style on here ‘I Used To Live Here’ a haunting piano based ballad which slowly builds orchestrally, so sad and atmospheric while ‘The Ocean Song’ is so poetic, once again chock full of atmosphere with fine drum sound and haunting siren like vocal harmonies which really paints a picture of the sea as you listen.
We have two versions of ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Dream’ a piano led dreamy song harking back to the 70’s, it could be biographical,(will have to ask her,Kate Bush perhaps!) it has a wonderfully catchy chorus along with relaxing vocal harmonies along with a wonderful production, then as album closer ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Dream Reprise’ it turns the number into a groove packed number with chugging acoustic guitar begins with just vocals and guitar until the piano joins in half way through, a very different take on the song and so different.
My personal track of the album (so many great tunes so that may change daily) is ‘Little Miss’ with its groovy feel, upbeat, fine acoustic guitar which gives it a country rock ‘n’ roll feel, foot tapping and free flowing with fab vocals, rocking guitar and piano, catchy with a true rock ‘n’roll ending.
Wonderful release with Jo and backing band in fine form cannot wait to hear some of it live later in the year.
