I have finally found an opportunity to use the word "flabbergasted"! ๐Ÿ˜„

If you've followed my posts over the last six months (yes I know, it's been the only thing I've posted about), you'll know I've been deep in a pet photography course/challenge. It's been an absolute whirlwind: 12 specific briefs, over 12 photoshoots, non-stop model searching, last-minute location scouting, and a constant battle with the weather, sun and daylight. It's been intense!

Last night marked the end of the course and I attended my first award ceremony in photography.

Now, for that word I've been waiting to use: I am genuinely FLABBERGASTED! I still can't quite believe it, but my beach shot of Junior for the "Get Down" challenge which was all about getting the camera as low to the ground as possible (where I literally had to eat sand - yes I did and lots of it - to get the camera low enough), was announced as the WINNER! Whaaaat?! ๐Ÿ†

While my complete portfolio didn't make the top three podium, I was incredibly honoured that it was awarded "Highly Commended" amongst the 56 completed portfolios. The feedback included: "My gosh that beautiful dog!", "โ€ฆBeautifully presented in so many different ways," and "Really good attention to detail with a lot of attention paid to the final quality of the image."

A massive, heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who helped me through this journey: all the patient dogs, the brilliant owners and friends. With a special shout-out to James, who as always has been a total star holding dogs, throwing treats and toys, and making all sorts of awkward noises to help direct the dogs. And listen to me panic about the weather!

It's going to take a while for this to fully sink in. What an incredible experience! I've developed so much in my skills and I can't wait to join another challenge next year!

My final results of the individual challenges:

Colouriffic - Top 10
Get Down - Winner

Challenge #11, and only one more to go before I have to finalise my complete portfolio! Eek! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

This challenge was about water and was suitably called "Splash!" ๐Ÿ’ฆ Why, oh why did I not shoot this earlier in the summer when there was plenty of light? Oh well. I needed two attempts at this challenge. The first one was planned with a gorgeous girl in the family, Brioche, in the Thames. The weather forecast suggested it would be just enough light coming through after finishing work but before sunset. However, dark clouds came in and I only managed to get a couple of shots in before it was way too dark. But... those two shots were interrupted by the naughty little stick thief Teddy, who was lurking in the bushes and decided to photobomb (photo in the comments). Brioche did her job very well and offered several beautiful leaps into the water, but unfortunately, with an ISO of 25600, the quality of the photos just wasn't good enough.

To our rescue, James helped to recruit another gorgeous little lady for a last-minute shoot (literally, just hours before the deadline): the sweet puppy Ember. We met at a beautiful village location, not ideal for action photography, but actually, it was great! That forced me to really think about how to incorporate the surroundings and the available light. A big shout-out to the most brilliant dog owner/handlers too! They got into the water with us and really put some effort in to avoid appearing in the background of the photos (also photo in the comments)!

Thank you to little Ember and her owners for helping out and landing me another top 10! ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰

Challenge #10! I can't believe there are only two more challenges before it is time to submit our final portfolios.

This challenge was about balancing two light sources by having the sun behind the dog, and using the ambient light from the sky to light up the front. This challenge was suitably called "Glow-Up".

Who knew finding a good location for this was nearly impossible? The best spots that offered some kind of filtering from the sun were on the local golf course, but I didn't fancy being in the way of the golfers. The sun was a big part of this challenge, and as we know, sunshine and golfing hordes go hand in hand, so the golf course was a no-go. Instead, we found a corner of a small nature reserve where the sun could be filtered through some foliage to create a soft rim light and some pretty bokeh, and by using a big, slightly translucent umbrella to cover the lens, I could somewhat control the sun flare.

Although I am completely stressed out over these challenges, struggling to find time to get out and location-scout, shoot, and edit, along with all the other things in life, I am so happy I've joined these challenges as it really is making me get out there to push myself and try new things. As one of my biggest challenges is time, yet again Junior had to step in and model for me; after all, he is a pro! However, the next challenge must incorporate water, so there is no way I'll be able to rely on Junior for that one :D

So, how did the Glow-Up challenge go? Junior's photo was shortlisted as a Top 10 with a rather lovely comment from the judges: "There's such a soft peaceful expression in this dog. It compliments the scene and type of light beautifully. The rimlight is well handled and gives the subject the glow-up we're looking for!" โ˜€๏ธ

We got a shortlist, but no top 10 or 20 for us this time! We'll learn. This time it was all about the head tilts. Life has been manic lately, and I only managed to get one photoshoot in with Junior, who wasn't interested in any of the sounds we were making. He ended up with a solid stare at James, who was standing beside him, instead of looking towards me and the camera. Point taken! Junior was clear: it wasn't going to happen that morning.

Instead, I recycled a photo from a previous photoshoot. It did have a slight head tilt, but it wasn't a very interesting photo overall. The judges' feedback was that the photo was wonky and that there wasn't enough light in his eyes. I get it! I can't see anything other than the wonkiness now... oh, dear.

On to the next one, for which I'll need full cooperation from the sun to succeed. Wish me luck! ๐Ÿ€
