During the summer I spent a few days in Montreal watching the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Photographically there was not much to report about the main event. However, some of the support races provided more action. The attached shots are from a Ferrari Challenge Race, where one driver thought he saw an opportunity.

As autumn starts to take a grip, I have been looking through a few shots from earlier this year and found these kite surfing shots from Mauritius. I had not set out to take the pictures, but I was wandering along the beach, rounded a headland and there was a windsurfing and kite surfing paradise.

It is strange where creatures' nest. Here we have a pair of Blue T**s who have made their nest inside a lamppost at Lakeside Station, Windemere. Perhaps they too like the sight of the steam trains passing by all day long.
Having spotted the nest taking shots was relatively easy with a longish lens, as the birds were in and out of the lamppost with food or disposing of waste.

Earlier this year I visited Sicily and the island of Stromboli. The initial plan was to climb Stromboli, but on arrival we learned that due to the amount of volcanic activity access was limited. I knew that the best pictures would be at night, but in order to scout out the best location we climbed the mountain as far as possible in daylight. The first shot shows an explosion during the day, with a faint hint of red lava in the expelled rock and dust. Later the same evening we returned and as the daylight receded, the display became more spectacular. The photographic challenge was to balance the exposure and shutter speed. Too much aperture and the molten rock was over exposed, not enough and everything was black. A long shutter speed gave nice light trails of the red rock flying through the air, but I was hand holding the camera, so a shorted shutter speed kept everything stable and un-blurred.

With wildlife photography sometimes you get lucky, and sometimes you don't. On a recent trip to Canada, I took an evening trip out in search of bears and one of the first we came across was this big Grizzly Bear. He was focused primarily on eating grass and flowers but started to eye us up as a potential protein meal. We remained in the car, but that did restrict movement and getting the shots I was looking for. However, I was pleased with the results.

A few years ago, I went to the Maldives to photograph Whale Sharks. The whale shark is a slow-moving, filter-feeding carpet shark and the largest known extant fish species. Thy can grow up to 18m, but the ones we saw were babies at around 6-7m.
The challenges when taking such shots are firstly finding the creatures, which can take days. Then once you have located them getting into a position where they swim past you is a bit of a lottery. Finally taking shots whilst swimming along, trying to not get to near the fish and getting some form of perspective all keep the mind occupied, if only for that brief encounter.

Photographing birds is always a challenge as they are moving fast and flapping their wings, which requires a short shutter speed and the need to adjust your focus, all at the same time. Added to this the location these shots were taken in was partly in sunshine and partly shaded. Thank goodness the camera does some of the adjustments for me automatically. Here are a few shots from The Loch Lomond Birds of Prey Centre.

Welcome to my page where I will endeavour to share with you some of the pictures I have taken on my trips around the UK and further afield.
The attached shots are all from the British Touring Car Championships at Knockhill in August 2021. The first part of taking shots at a race circuit is scouting out some good places to take pictures. Some spots are great, but safety fencing blocks your view, other clear shots have no 'action' in them. Fortunately, I found a couple of good places at Knockhill and the on-course spills and thrills were plentiful.
