It all started in June 2020, during the middle of the COVID pandemic. The whole world seemed to grind to a halt, and being without any work for the foreseeable future, I decided to find a hobby to keep myself busy. This page will be highlighting all my work and my profession with this rewarding hobby.

Had a little play with SharpCap Pro’s ‘planetary live stacking’ through the Skywatcher 10” Flextube Dobsonian last night.

I initially viewed Jupiter through the Skywatcher 28mm LET eyepiece, and then moved upto the SVBONY Aspherical 10mm & 4mm eyepieces. Each time it got closer and closer with more and more detail; it was honestly breathtaking to see with the naked eye! 🔭

These were a 500 frame stack with best 50% of frames being added to the stack. I used my Altair 26C with ROI to 1024 x 768 pixels. Ideally I need a 4x Barlow and a dedicated planetary camera to get the perfect resolution, but this was a decent start!

After faffing with numerous extension tubes, comparing it to the existing coma corrector backfocus, I finally got a second SVBONY SV226 filter drawer installed for the Newtonian setup! I just need a second camera now for the Draco62 rig! 😅😜

Also was the first test with the ZWO EAF within NINA, and I easily worked out the backlash too. I was quite surprised actually at how easy it was! 😁 I bought the EAF back in September at IAS, but haven’t done anything with it since I fitted it! 🤦‍♂️

With the start of Galaxy season, can’t wait to start using the longer focal lengths of 130PDS (650mm) and the 200p Flex-tube (1200mm)!🌟🔭

The Practical Astronomy Show 2025 was a hit! Especially for my daughter, who was probably the youngest attendee at the show! 🤣

Was great to see everyone there again and have a good old chinwag! 🤣

I managed to pick up a few things too; an Altair dual-band Sulphur-II/Oxygen-III filter, allowing me to do true SHO with my current IDAS NBZ (Hydrogen-Alpha/Oxygen-III) dual-band filter and Altair 26C colour camera. This will be a new venture and a real test for my editing skills! 😬 I also picked up some Primaluce 10” rings and a long Losmandy dovetail in order to be able to mount our Flextube Dobsonian on my AZ-EQ6-GT, just in time for Galaxy season! 🔭 Just got to wait for them to be shipped from the warehouse this week!

The Jellyfish & Monkey Head Nebulae

This is the second project that I have been working on once Orion had set around 11PM.

Once all the Orion exposures had finished, the telescope automatically slewed and centred and continued taking images, until I finally lost this array of targets around 1AM; fortunately, they perfectly fit in the same frame and orientation as Orion.

From top to bottom:
‣ Sh2-249
‣ Jellyfish Nebula (IC 443)
‣ The Monkey Head Nebula (NGC 2174/2175)

In the end I managed to stack 7 hours 5 minutes worth of data, across 4 nights. I did capture a 5th night of images which would have bought the total exposure time upto 8 hours 25 minutes, however I was battling an ever increasing moon that caused some massive gradients that were impossible to remove. Therefore I took the executive decision to completely scrap those subs.

Technical Details:

Exposure Length: 85x 300-Seconds
Flat Frames: 30x
Dark Frames: 30x
Bias Frames: 60x

Telescope: Founder Optics Draco 62 + 0.83x Reducer
Camera: Altair 26C
Filter: IDAS NBZ Dual-band Filter
Mount: Skywatcher AZ-EQ6-GT
Guidescope: SVBONY 60mm Scope
Guide Camera: ZWO 120MM-Mini

Over the past fortnight or so, we’ve had a string of clear nights. Therefore I decided to capture a couple of my favourite deep sky objects in a single frame before we lose them for another year. To fit them all in, I used my new Draco 62 refractor; I say new, it’s six months old now!!!

The targets in question are:
‣ The Orion Nebula (M42)
‣ Horsehead Nebula (B33)
‣ Flame Nebula (NGC 2024)

I can only image this framing for a couple of hours before I lose them behind the garden fence, and then I have to move onto another target (which I’ll release very soon!) Even so, I still managed to capture 10 hours 25 minutes! This really allowed me to bring out the background dust that stems between them; I’m really surprised I managed to capture this much dust from my Bortle 5 back garden! 😳

First Light with the Founder Optics Draco 62! 🔭

Managed to capture 4h35m on NGC 1499 - The California Nebula, last Thursday evening. I lost it behind the fence line around 4AM, otherwise would have been more towards the 6hr mark.

I’ve never been able to fit the whole nebula into a single frame with the 130PDS, so it was the perfect target to test out the Draco, being right overhead in the constellation Perseus for most of the night.

I also decided to use the included 0.83x Reducer, just to see if I had calculated the correct backspacing, which I fortunately had! This made it even easier to capture the faint emission trailing off towards the bottom of the nebula.

Using the reducer brought the focal ratio down to a ridiculous F/3.9 at a focal length of 249mm, allowing me to shoot 300s exposures, even with the NBZ narrowband filter in the filter drawer.

Overall my experience with the Draco 62 was very positive and I can’t wait to use it again; might even add some more time to this target and bring it up more towards the 8hr mark!

While we’ve had some constant cloudy whether recently, I’ve done some major upgrades to my Sky-Watcher 130PDS!

Last month at the International Astronomy Show, I picked up a ZWO EAF - One step further towards being fully automated! - However, when I went to install it, I messed it up pretty badly, to the point of where the stock focuser was completely shot! 😬🤦‍♂️

After watching a video that released about the CYCK focuser that he fitted to his Sky-Watcher 150P Quattro, and how impressed he was with it, I decided to get one myself! It ticks all the boxes that I like in a focuser; rack and pinion instead of crayford style & a graduated rotator to boot! Perfect!

Fitting it was quite simple once I had drilled out the ripped bolt head on the original focuser! 😅 The only other issue that I came across was the adapter ring didn’t quite fit the 130PDS, so I ended up taking a chisel to the scope and had to scrape off all the paint inside the mounting plate, thus allowing the new adapter ring to sit flush, as shown in the pictures. I transferred the rubber washers & grub screws from the original focuser, and it was a perfect fit!

The ZWO EAF was then a simple attachment at the end of the process. What’s even better, is my William Optics Rotolock that I had fitted to the old focuser fitted in place of the blue compression ring attachment at the end of the focus tube!

I managed to setup the 200P Dobsonian the other evening, just for the chance to see C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) before it leaves our skies for another 80,000 years!

I clamped my phone to a 25mm eyepiece to do some eyepiece projection; exposure length 30s, Astro Mode, iPhone 15 Pro.

C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS

I’ve got life things going on at the moment that’s more important than Astro, but it means I haven’t been able to setup any of the telescopes recently. However, on the one clear night we’ve had, I wanted to atleast capture the current comet in the night sky after missing out on Neowise.

This is just a simple 10s exposure on the IPhone 15 Pro, with a little bit of editing done on the phone.

Introducing my new widefield imaging rig - The Founder Optics Draco 62 🔭

I picked this up at the International Astronomy Show a couple weeks ago, but had to wait for a few other parts to turn up afterwards in order to be able to mount my guidescope on top of the rail.

This versatile APO quintuplet refractor features ED glass, with a native focal length of 300mm at F/4.8, which is perfect for those larger galaxies and nebulae. Even more so with the included 0.83x 2-element reducer, bringing it down to 250mm at F/3.9.

I’m yet to get first light with this rig, but hoping to get some amazing widefield images and fit in those targets that are just too big for my 130PDS.

The culmination of 3hr20m on Messier 31, best known as the Andromeda Galaxy, our closest galactic neighbour at 2.5 million light-years from Earth.

It was also the first test of all the upgrades that I have done to my Sky-Watcher 130PDS, including the mirror mask that I fitted to the primary mirror. This removes the diffraction artefacts caused by the three mirror clips that hold the main mirror cell in place.

It wasn’t all stress-free though, the first part of the night was spent fixing pinched optics! I must have tightened the screws too tight! It was a back-and-forth process, in the pitch black, loosening and tightening the screws until all my stars were perfectly round and not triangles! In the end though, it was all worth it!

I also finally installed the correct connector on my AstroPC box so I don’t electrocute myself, as well as external WiFi antennas to improve connection to my home network.

I’m late to the party with this one, but I visit the International Astronomy Show on the 14th September, and had an absolute blast meeting so many big names in astro!

I could have bought so many telescopes (and I did! 🤣), but bought some minor upgrades for the Sky-Watcher 130PDS, allowing me to easily swap the guidescope between this rig and my new addition! 😁
