Historically The Rock had been home to the town’s fire station since circa 1875 when a former industrial building in Stanley Street was converted to the purpose.

Prior to this the earliest record of fire protection in the town was two primitive, hand-operated fire pumps stored in a ginnel in Clarke Street.

By the mid 19th century a Bury Fire Brigade was being operated by the West of England Fire Insurance Company, but its only equipment was a hand hose cart.

In 1925 a new fire station was erected in Stanley Street, incorporating some of the old building, to the cost of £7,000 — equivalent to more than £297,500 today.

A new five-bay fire station on The Rock opened in 1967 and was the third to stand on the same site.

However, after almost five decades of service, the ageing station was vacated in July 2012 when firefighters completed the landmark move to their base at the Chamberhall Business Park.

HMS Ganges was a training ship and later stone frigate of the Royal Navy. She was established as a boys' training establishment in 1865, and was based aboard a number of hulks before moving ashore. She was based alternately in Falmouth, Harwich (from 1899) and Shotley (from 1905). She remained in service at RNTE Shotley until October 1976. During Ganges's time in Cornwall allegations of harsh and brutal treatment were reported to the Admiralty. One wardroom steward shot himself over the matter, and the reports aroused indignation in the local community.HMS Ganges was an 84-gun second-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 10 November 1821 at Bombay Dockyard, constructed from teak. She is notable for being the last sailing ship of the Navy to serve as a flagship and was the second ship to bear the name.
HMS Ganges was the name given to several Royal Navy ships since from 1779, but in 1905 it was chosen as the title for a new training base at Shotley Gate, near Ipswich where about 500 boy recruits were stationed. In 1907, its famous 143ft (44m)-high training mast was erected on the parade ground for recruits to climb. Recruit numbers rose to 2,000 during World War Two, but dropped to about 1,000 by the late 1960s and declined further until the base closed for good in June 1976.

The Victoria Arches are a series of bricked-up arches built in an embankment of the River Irwell in Manchester. They served as business premises, landing stages for steam packet riverboats and as Second World War air-raid shelters. They were accessed from wooden staircases that descended from Victoria Street.

Regular flooding resulted in the closure of the steam-packet services in the early 20th century, and the arches were later used for general storage. Following the outbreak of the Second World War they were converted into air raid shelters. They are now bricked up and inaccessible, the staircases having been removed in the latter part of the 20th century.
