I used to be really good at posting regularly on social media, sharing the highs and lows and not overthinking it. Fast forward to now and it’s another year gone past without me posting anything other than quick stories completely randomly.

I could give loads of reasons why; imposter syndrome, time, perfectionism and so much more. But for now, I’m going to say thank you to everybody who has stuck around and sent me lovely private messages.

New content is on its way as I wade through the mountains of editing I’ve accumulated. But for now, here is a throwback to warmer afternoons and longer evenings.

Enjoying a little trip away in Cumbria, immersing myself in all things gundog. I thought I’d do a little throwback to a few years ago (before covid!) when I had the pleasure of traveling to Stockholm and met this little guy.

Can you guess the breed?

Following a weekend away at I can honestly say, I’m well and truly looking forward to the season. I don’t personally shoot, but I thoroughly enjoy seeing dogs working and doing what they love, something I can never get enough of.

Today I found out the very sad news that a wonderful little dog I photographed 5 years ago passed away. He was very much loved, and whilst he didn’t have the best start in life he most definitely made up for it with his new family.

For such a tiny little dog, he made one of the biggest impacts to both my career and ethos as an animal photographer.

RIP little King Louis.

Another special little story. Louis had a photoshoot just last week with his two brothers Ronnie & Reggie. Louis is 9 years old, a scruffy little bundle of cuteness who was rescued just over a year ago, he spends his time watching his brothers doing agility and going on adventures together. There is only one problem, Louis can't be touched. This poor little chap is absolutely petrified of people touching him and so I had to spend the entire shoot suppressing my inner urge to give him a great big cuddle. However, as the shoot went on I was amazed to find Louis warmed to being ignored. He even brushed past me and climbed over my legs a few times; something I found an absolute privilege. Matt and his mum were fantastic with the Three Musketeers as we fondly called them as they spent most of the time jumping around and chasing each other. This sweet little guy definitely left Papillon prints on my heart.

If you were to ask me what my favourite colours were, it would always be gold, or various shades of blue. The contrast of warm and cool colours side by side is nothing new in art or photography, but it's something Ive always been drawn to along with its effect on how we feel about the subject and emotion within the image.

We have been blessed recently with both frost and snow, but in true English style - it's now back to rain for the foreseeable forecast. So now I sit with a cup of tea, working away on far too many things at once, and I share with you my golden girl.. in the early morning when frost was sparkling, and smells were strong, and the world was still warm in bed.

DIGITAL FILE SYSTEMS & ORGANISING ...

Following the recent new lockdown in the UK I have been hunkering down and working through some of the stuff I've been putting off - for years.

One of my biggest faults is organising files. I love paper, stationary, I honestly couldn't live without my Filofax and highlighters. But if there's one thing I will never love is moving over to digital notes, files and folders. I have spent a long time trawling the internet for some sort of formula, or concrete system of organising files and I've never found the answer.

So I've put it off, until the dreaded message repeatedly pops up 'Your scratch discs are full'. So I'd go through and do some culling, run a few diagnostics and delete some stuff that didn't seem that relevant. But it never seems to actually solve the problem.

Over 500k raw files, 8 terabytes of external memory, and over 11 years of files from different computers and systems.

If anybody has the answer, I'd love to hear how you systemise and organise your files. Lightroom is a killer for memory, and as far as I'm concerned there's not enough colour coding for my liking when it comes to files and folders!

January is usually a time when I’m planning adventures, booking flights and enjoying home comforts. 2020 was different; I was due to go to a number of new countries, including America - a dream I’ve had for many years, begin serious plans around projects I had nurtured & refined for as-long as I can remember, with that came other freedoms and feelings of fulfilment.

This year has had its struggles for everybody, and I truly believe for many it’s meant battles financially, emotionally and mentally. Most of all I think it has taught us that our freedoms can be removed, and things that we took for granted can be lost. It’s come to reveal those who are there, and those who aren’t. It’s caused life to slow down, and with that comes the need for change.

For me this time has forced me to see some realities around my health and relationship with photography, and how some of the passion for what I was doing had been lost in the pursuit of income and security. This has caused me to make some decisions moving forward, which haven’t been easy to make but I know in my heart are for the right reasons long term....

1. I will not be hosting, nor leading any workshops, or retreats for the forceable future. I will still be offering 1:1 tuition to a select few who I feel share my ethos and passions, but for the moment I am stepping back from my teaching.

2. Private commissions will also be reduced, owners will need to be flexible around lockdowns and tier systems, and viewings will be completed remotely where possible. (I will honour all current bookings, or plans that are being made)

This is to allow me to spend more time working on the projects I have planned but never had the chance to fully immerse myself in. To work on self development and nurture the ideas and work that I feel passionate about.

I will continue to post on social media, but the content may change, consequently I understand that not everybody will continue on this journey with me. I appreciate everybody who has and continues to support me, & hope this this does not bring too much disappointment.

Happy New Year, and here’s to 2021- whatever it may bring.

Even if it’s a little late, I wish everybody a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. I hope that you are surrounded by love and kindness even if not physically. I hope that your hearts are warm with hope, and your tummies full, and I hope that whatever this year brings; that it be everything you need at this time on your journey.

What storybook character does Flo remind you of? I'd love to know!

After a studio session, I couldn't help but pop out with this little lady to get a shot of her in a patch of heather nearby. Flo is an absolute sweetheart, and is hopefully going to become a stooge dog for her very clever owner who is a behaviourist.

Check out her page and follow them on instagram to see all their adventures.
