Gillian Thomas Photography I'm a retired Staff Nurse and an amateur photographer. Based in Dorset, I enjoy capturing the beautiful and special moments of nature all around me.

All photos on this page are taken by me and are available as prints. I do not sell as NFTs. Hi, I'm Gillian. I moved down to West Dorset from Farnham, Surrey in 2005. I was actually born here and adopted at 6 weeks old. I feel like I have come back to my roots. I love living in this beautiful county, which inspires me to take photos and share them here on my page. I feel very lucky to live in a beautiful part of Dorset, where I can visit beaches and countryside. I love photography as a whole, but I mostly take landscapes, seascapes, nature and wildlife shots. I belong to several photography groups on Facebook, where I post my photos regularly. I enjoy sharing my photography with fellow photographers. I usually post daily on my page, but sometimes my long working hours prevent that. You can also follow me on Instagram - . I was recently a winner in the Dorset Landscapes for Life Photo Competition, run by the Dorset Area of Outstanding Nature Beauty (DAOAB) and had my photo exhibited at Durlston Castle, Swanage. https://www.dorsetaonb.org.uk/celebrating_60_years/landscapes-for-life-photo-competition/ It was in an exhibition at Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester in the Spring of 2021. Dramatic crepuscular rays from the bright morning sun cast beams of golden light stretching across the sky. The sunlight danced on the rippling water, forming a shimmering, textured golden path across the sea. I took this shot about half an hour after sunrise on Saturday . Do you think the wait was worth it?

A peaceful start to Saturday morning.
When I went to bed last night at 10pm, the app said great for sunrise, but had changed to good when I woke up at 5.45am. I've missed some stunners this past week, so I decided to get up anyway.
There was hardly any pre sunrise colour and the sun didn't manage to poke through the clouds until about 15 minutes after sunrise!
Despite feeling rather downhearted , it was a gorgeous morning to have a walk on the beach, with the sound of the sea lapping at my feet.
Sunrise is getting later by the day, so it should make it easier to get out of my bed! 😍

Another throwback to those warm days when I spotted a wren while relaxing in a pleasantly cool hide. It was several feet away, so I didn’t notice it had a cricket/grasshopper in its beak until I downloaded my photos and zoomed in. This shot was one of my entries for this year’s BBC Countryfile Calendar. It didn’t make the shortlist, but I’m still really happy with it and thought I'd share it. I called it 'Anyone for Cricket?'.
I’m in the process of selecting photos for my next year’s wildlife calendar. If there are any you’ve seen on my page that you really like, let me know and they might make it into the final selection.

Throwback to those warmer summer days when I spent a few hours wandering around Bennetts Water Gardens in Weymouth. I always try to visit once a year to admire the stunning water lilies and spot the local wildlife. Tucked away on the outskirts of Weymouth, it’s a wonderfully peaceful place to relax, full of tranquillity. The gardens are best known for their Monet-style Japanese bridge, built to celebrate the centenary of Claude Monet’s iconic 1899 Water Lily Pond painting.
I took plenty of photos that day 🤭 so here’s part one of my visit to Bennetts Water Gardens. Make sure you are 'following' me to see part two coming soon.. 😍
I’ve been pretty quiet over the past few days, due to travelling up to Berkshire for a long weekend and catching up with old friends and family in Hampshire and Surrey. It turned out to be a very busy weekend.

A cloud of yellows – over the Bank Holiday weekend, we visited Abbey Farm in Abbotsbury, mainly for the summer fair, but decided to finally climb the hill to the chapel, something we’d been meaning to do for ages. It wasn’t as warm as it has been, so the climb wasn’t too bad. On the way up, we started spotting Clouded Yellow butterflies, and there were loads of them fluttering about. I’d seen one in my garden a few weeks ago, but before that, I’d never seen one.
This one was flirting with another on a leaf, and it was fascinating to watch. They didn't stay still for long, making it tricky to capture them on camera. These are the best shots from the many I managed to take.
It seems like it’s been a great year for Clouded Yellows, and I’ve heard they’ve been spotted in other parts of Dorset too. The Clouded Yellow is one of the truly migratory European butterflies and a regular visitor to Britain and Ireland. While some of these golden yellow beauties appear every year, the species is known for occasional mass migrations and breeding, fondly remembered as “Clouded Yellow Years” — maybe this is one of them.

An early morning stroll at sunrise - it’s hard to believe this was a month ago. The day began relatively warm compared to today, which has been rather wet and windy here in Weymouth.
