Martin Dolan Photography Dorset based Amateur Landscape photographer Hello

My name is Martin and I'm an amateur Landscape photographer from Sturminster Marshall, Dorset.

I have a passion for good light and capturing my favourite places lit by it. You can often find me along the Jurassic Coast, the New Forest and anywhere in between with my camera.

​​My time is devoted to my wife and our 3 daughters with our youngest a mere 2 years old..

I have been lucky enough to enjoy some wonderful experiences behind the camera over the last 7 years but in 2021, I made the

conscious decision to swap chasing light for changing nappies when not driving trains for a living. It has to be said that enjoying the precious moments with my children as they grow up is an experience worth a million photographs. When time allows, I intend to continue growing as a photographer, to learn and improve whilst exploring the county I proudly call home - Dorset. I do hope that when viewing my work you may feel something, a connection with the landscape perhaps or maybe just experience a rekindling of a childhood memory perhaps. A photo can transport us to a forgotten time in our lives and the medium of still photography has given me so much more of an understanding of the world we all live in.

There was some really nice light down at the bridge this morning.

I'm going to really enjoy having this a couple minutes walk from my front door now we've moved into the village.
It's great to have a subject/location to use as a project and photograph in different weather, from different angles and trying out various ideas. It used to be Knowlton Church and over the years it most definitely helped me improve my photography so here's to 2023.

Mist, trees and light.

I'm always looking to create depth in my photos.
Composition, for me, comes first, if I can't create one then I give up pretty much instantly, for better or for worse.
Good light or making the best of conditions is next on the list but I find depth is a great tool to help invite someone into the story you're trying to tell.

My collection of photos, spread over numerous hard drives is a total mess. Most folders are unnamed, nothing is organised, and probably more than half is unwanted RAW files never to be worked up.
Today I sat down with a coffee and really started to go through it all, I think I need a new delete button as it’s worn out already!
I do like finding the odd gem when spring cleaning though, the odd memory to relive for a few fleeting moments..

Some New Forest reflections tonight.
Composition is THE foundation of Landscape photography. You can have all the gear, all the conditions nature can offer you but without a solid composition it all falls short. I shot so many frames at this spot, each time tweaking things until I was happy.

White Mill Bridge, carbon dated to the twelfth century.. 🤯

Did you know that attached to the parapet in the middle of the bridge (north side) is a cast iron plate, bearing the following: NOTICE - DORSET. Any person wilfully INJURING any part of this COUNTY
BRIDGE will be guilty of a FELONY and upon conviction liable to be
TRANSPORTED FOR LIFE - BY THE COURT.
You'd get less for shoplifting these days haha!

Picking out details at the beach. Long lens compositions aren’t my ‘go to’ choice but this little scene looked very cool to me so I fired off a few frames. On the last one a seagull kindly visited and completed the image.
