Bisley Photographs by Andrew Clifford Photographs of wildlife and landscapes, mostly in and around Bisley, Surrey

I've been a keen amateur photographer since my teens, but retirement a few years ago has given me the time to indulge more seriously. After living in our home for over 30 years, we have (courtesy of COVID-19) discovered the wonderful countryside and wildlife on our doorstep.

After what seems an age - just a few days due to a combination of weather, grandparenting and car repairs - we finally managed a walk today. Much cooler and more comfortable, but still hard work finding subjects. Perhaps the most heartening sight (in the absence of any rain to break the drought) was green shoots already appearing on the Common where only a week ago an area the size of a couple of football pitches was burnt out.

The trickle of subjects continued today, with a couple turning up in one of the few damp spots locally (I think there's a leak somewhere😉), and another on the lookout over a recently cut field.

I was beginning to wonder if my photographic drought was catching up with the meteorological one we're currently enduring in the south of England, but it broke today after a week of zero subjects. At first it seemed I'd have to settle for a distant Buzzard, but as we neared home I spotted a rusty red coat through the hedge. A lovely Roe doe was browsing the brambles and finally turned round to offer a great portrait.

If there was ever a question of why dragonflies are among my favourite subjects, I hope that today's set answers it.

I visited Brookwood Cemetery in the hope of spotting some more Clouded Yellow butterflies. I saw two fleetingly out on Brookwood Heath along with some equally elusive Swallows, and a solitary male Stonechat, but the best location was around the ornamental pond by the Glades of Remembrance. As well as some cute juvenile Moorhens and Mallards there was a profusion of dragonflies. I also had two new sightings today - a Small Red Damselfly and the exuvia (the shed skin) of a dragonfly larva.

I was torn between visiting Brookwood Cemetery, where Clouded Yellow butterflies were seen yesterday, or the Basingstoke Canal at Brookwood Country Park. I opted finally for the country park, as I felt that it might be marginally cooler by the water, and I was sure there would be a good variety of dragonflies too. I wasn't disappointed - so many varieties of blue damselflies, some dragonflies and some waterfowl to boot..

And I spotted a Clouded Yellow in the long meadow grass 😁

In most respects we visited Heather Farm at the wrong time of day - it was a humid and hot afternoon - but the timing was perfect to see six Red Kites swooping around as the long grass was being cut. I never cease to be amazed by the sight of a Grey Heron perched high in a tree, and the male Banded Demoiselles were at their showy best.

As well as spotting a few birds out on Sheet's Heath today, my walk was book-ended by a couple of head-turners. On the way out I noticed (and did a double take) a very pale coloured Common Buzzard showing off its wings. My favourite patch of Hemp-agrimony not only had several butterflies, but I couldn't miss the bright orange Rosy Footman moth.
