It’s a question I’m often asked: “ What is a typical day as a Press Photographer?

In this instance Sunday 3rd July I covered various jobs throughout the day for both The Express & Star and The Shropshire Star. The lead-up to the day would consist of an email from the Chief Photographer with a list of jobs to cover on the day sent a few days before the date.

The days’ stories covered a Race for life run at Himley Hall in Dudley, 900 people turned out to raise money for Cancer Research while raising over £33,000. Then on to a petrol station selling the cheapest petrol in the area for a few snaps of the forecourt. Then on to an NHS Funday, again raising funds for another great cause. The next job was an hour’s drive to Shropshire to cover Shrewsbury Live.. which included Monster Trucks and stunt riding. The final job of the day is another charity event in Kingswinford raising money for local charities. They remembered a 16-year-old footballer who died from an asthma attack and a young 7-year-old who needs a transplant.

Throughout the day photos were edited and captioned and sent via my mobile phone to the news desk. They will be used both in print and online over the coming days.

Are you an event organiser ? in particular conferences and product launches anything where speeches are part of the focus of the event. Long after the event has ended the professional photos that have been taken will be the only tangible reminder of the day. You would have used them during the event to highlight the speakers etc. In the following weeks and months those same photos would appear on various online platforms, websites, printed media etc…but how eye-catching are they…do they stop the scroll, and does your audience stop and read your content?

A recent conference I covered is a good example of how to use colours effectively as part of the set up..…You will notice background colours can make or break a photo. In this instance, the use of colourful lighting makes the photos pop… add in the speaker and you have a punchy photo that jumps off the page/screen. So next time you organise an event think backgrounds..think colour…think how you stop the scroll…
