In 1542 the CROWN OF IRELAND ACT was passed making Henry and all of his descendants KING of Ireland. He began a policy of having the Irish chiefs give their lands to him and then he would give them back under a Royal Charter - they would keep their lands and have protection but there were very heavy exchanges. They would pay rent, they would have to change their title, and their entire way of life would have to become Anglicized. This meant clothing, language, and religion. By the time Henry's son Edward VI the became king, England decided to take serious measure to deal with the MacDonnell Clan-the most powerful caln on the Antrim Coast in the North of Ireland. In 1551 Sir James Croft was sent with a fleet of 4 ships to launch an attack on the MacDonell clan and most specifically Kinbane Castle. The English sieges of Kinbane Castle against the great Colla MacDonell fell in to legend. Underneath the castle a cave became known as "Lag Na Sassenach" or Hollow of the English.

Cersei Lannister from Games of Thrones was based on a very real person: Margaret of Anjou. After the disastrous Battle of Northampton, the Lancastrian Queen found herself a fugitive in the wild woods of the Welsh border. Robbed, betrayed, and holding a knife to her throat, she was left with nothing but her young son and a fierce determination to save his birthright.
This is the story of her desperate flight to Harlech Castle.

“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” — Edith Wharton PS it took two trillion years to take this picture with no one in it. Worth it? Yes. 💚

Why do we call Mary I of England ‘Bloody Mary’? Should we call her that? Is it justified? five years after Mary passed away, there was a book written by a man named John Foxe and it became known as Foxe’s Book of Martyrs. And in this book, he vividly, graphically, and shockingly describes the over 280 executions that happened under Mary I’s reign. It was incredibly widely read, very popular, very, very well received, and it was in this book that the nickname ‘Bloody Mary’ was written. This book was written with a very specific political and religious agenda and it was one of the most prolific and most important pieces of propaganda written during Elizabeth I's reign.
