ZK343 departs RIAT under the guise of a IX Bomber squadron, but in an another life, back in 2014 she had a shiney black, red, grey and yellow tail with BX on it. That was when she was the Display jet of 29 squadron and was flown by Flight Lieutenant Noel Rees.

Fred departs
▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️
The Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy affectionately known as “Fred” by both the military and spotter alike. The heavy lift component operated by 439th Airlift Wing based at Westover Air Reserve Base, Massachusetts, the final aircraft to depart RIAT on the Monday departure day.

One of 52 now flying in the USAF inventory, all of which have now been updated from the screamers of C-5A/B series aircraft built between 1968-73 for the A’s and 1985-89 for the B’s. From 1998 52 entered the Avionics Modernization Program which began upgrading the C-5’s avionics to include a glass cockpit, navigation equipment, and a new autopilot system. This also included the Reliability Enhancement and Re-engining Program to the to upgrade the Galaxy to the C-5M model with the last one being returned to the USAF in August 2018 and now expected to fly well into the 2040’s and beyond.

NX611 Just Jane…
▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️ As the sun sets on another season at the former RAF East Kirkby, the center piece of the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Center, Avro Lancaster MkVII “Just Jane” sits in the dying light of the day, idling her 4 Rolls Royce Merlin engines. They say that a thing of beauty is a joy forever, well this over the years has become a pilgrimage to a place where you can see and hear such beauty in full flow. I really cannot wait for her to be returned to the air, where she truely belongs, next to the only two other flying examples of her type in the world, in the BBMFs Avro Lancaster MkI PA474, who has just enter Major Maintenance that is anticipated to last 18 months, and The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum Lancaster Mk X FM213 “the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster” or affectionately “VeRA”

Italys Finest
▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️
The Fiat G.91R/1 and the Aermacchi MB.326E came to RIAT from the Reggio Emilia Airport Northern Italy. Just a few miles down the E35 from Milan. But we’ll return to Italy in a different post.

The Fiat is the only G.91R flying in the world. Made airworthy to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Italian Air Force in 2023. Now proudly painted in the colors of the Frecce Tricolori, the G.91 was used by the Frecce up to 1982, when it was replaced by the newer, and currently still used, MB-399PAN.

The Aermacchi is possibly one of the most successful trainer aircraft ever built. This one
marked as an aircraft of Italian AF 6th Wing “Diavolo Rosso” (Red Devil), Code “6-43”

These photos were taken on the departure day at RIAT 25

Danish Falcon Finale
▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️
Retiring from service two years early, the Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF) F-16’s have been flying for the best part of 40 years. These aircraft are being considered for use by Ukraine with some being sold to Argentina.

The final RDAF F-16 solo display aircraft, E-006, was painted in a special Danish flag livery last year and it returned for its final display at the Royal International Air Tattoo 2025 with Captain Troels “TEO” Vang returning behind the stick.

This would be the final photo of 006 I’d take as she left Fairford on the Monday departure day, going out with full beans.

U-2
▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️Designed and build by Lockheed in 1953, by the infamous Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, the Dragon Lady was built to fly above 65,000ft, the idea being that this was too high to be out of reach of Soviet fighters, missiles, and radar. This aircraft is based at RAF Fairford from Beale AFB, California, with 9th Reconnaissance Wing, 9th Operations group, 99th Expeditionary Reconnaissance. Here in Senior Span configuration displaying at the Royal International Air Tattoo

For Slab
▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️
Most of you will remember the events at the rehearsal for Radom Airshow in August…

Sadly, Polish Air Force Major Maciej “Slab” Krakowian, a skilled and competent pilot, fatally crashed into the runway while excusing a maneuver he’d performed so many times before..

Rewind just over a month before hand and “Slab” performed at the highlight of the summers aviation airshow calendar in the uk, the Royal international Air Tattoo 2025, at RAF Fairford in the Cotswolds…

More photos to come as I finished editing from the show…

And now for something completely different…
▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️
Known as the Jackson, the M35 was conceived in 1943 it was the combination of of the hull of a M10 tank and the M4 Sherman’s reliable chassis and drivetrain, and a new turret mounting of the 90 mm gun. Weirdly they were still in use by the Republic of China Army until about 2001

Invader alert
▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️
Flying Victory Show regulars North American P-51D Mustang “Jersey Jerk” and Republic P-47 Thunderbolt “Nellie”, the Douglas B-26 Invader “Sweet Eloise II” made her debut display at the Victory Show Cosby today. One of only 3 Invaders flying in Europe, it’s a very exciting display with plenty of topsides. Hopefully this isn’t the last we see of this gorgeous airframe in the UK.
