Farndon Soapbox Derby 2026

Next Sunday I’ll be heading down to the Farndon Soapbox Derby, photographing the event and capturing everything from the characters and teams to the action on the course.

It’s always great to photograph events like this where there’s so much personality, atmosphere and unpredictability — and I’m really looking forward to being part of the day.

Most importantly, the event is being run to raise funds for the Hospice of the good shepherd, so hopefully it’ll be a brilliant day while supporting a fantastic local cause.

If you’re heading down, I’ll hopefully see you there.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing this beautiful little family during an evening session.

We headed out as the sun was beginning to drop, giving us that lovely warm evening light which gradually changed throughout the shoot. It was one of those evenings where everything just seemed to come together — good light, a relaxed setting and plenty of little moments happening naturally between them.

My approach to family photography has increasingly become less about creating a succession of perfectly posed photographs and more about capturing the relationships between the people in front of me.

Of course I’ll always make sure we get the traditional family photograph where everyone is looking towards the camera, but some of my favourite images are usually the ones in between. A dad kissing his daughter, a baby wrapping her hand around a parent’s finger, the way she looks at her mum, or simply the three of them concentrating on each other rather than the camera.

I like to give families the space to interact naturally and photograph what happens. Those small gestures and expressions might seem ordinary at the time, but they are also the things that change incredibly quickly as children grow.

The setting sun gave the whole session a wonderfully warm feel and provided a beautiful backdrop, but ultimately these photographs are about the three people within them and the connection they have with one another.

That, more and more, is what I want my family photography to be about — not just what a family looked like at a particular moment, but what being together felt like.

The moon rising over Wrexham this evening.

I spotted the warm orange glow climbing into the deep blue evening sky and grabbed the Sony a7 IV with the Sigma 150–600mm to get a closer look.

As impressive as the detail of the moon is through the longer lens, I actually prefer the wider view. There’s something about seeing it hanging above the rooftops, chimneys and trees that gives it a sense of scale and place.

Sometimes the best photographs are simply the result of looking up at the right moment.

A rather spectacular thunderstorm passed just over Wrexham this evening.

I had been watching it develop on LightningMaps.org as it slowly travelled north, lingering around Oswestry for a while before eventually making its way towards Wrexham.

At first the distant clouds would occasionally illuminate, followed a few seconds later by the low rumble of thunder. Then suddenly it was overhead.

The entire sky began lighting up as branches of lightning stretched across the clouds above me, with the thunder rumbling and echoing between them.

Naturally, the camera came out.

I used my Sony A7 IV with the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 manual focus lens. I wanted as wide a field of view as possible to try and capture not only the lightning itself, but some sense of the scale of the storm above.

Photographing lightning is always going to involve a fair amount of luck, but watching those enormous branches appear across the frame was quite something.

A very impressive end to the evening and now I’m going to dry off and go to bed … unless it starts all over again.

There’s something about this time of year that always makes me a little reflective.

The days are still warm, the evenings are still long, and there’s still plenty of summer left to enjoy, but you can feel it slowly beginning to change.

Looking at this photograph from Perranporth, the sun is setting over the beach, casting that beautiful golden light across the water and leaving the beach in shadow.

And in a way, it feels like the summer itself.

The sun is slowly setting on the long summer days. The evenings will soon become shorter, the nights a little cooler and before long we’ll be looking back at those long days wondering where they went.

I think that’s what I love about photography. A single photograph can capture a moment, but sometimes it can also capture a feeling.

For now though, there’s still a little bit of summer left.

A few weeks ago I was in Perranporth, Cornwall, and managed to catch this beautiful evening down on the beach.

The light was absolutely incredible, with the sun setting and casting this warm orange glow across the sea and the wet sand. I also managed to catch the little crescent moon in the sky, which I think just adds something extra to the photo.

Perranporth is one of those places I could happily spend hours photographing. There is always something different happening with the light, the sea and the cliffs, and it is so easy to just stand there and take it all in.

Cornwall really is such a beautiful place, and this trip gave me so many photos that I’m still working my way through.

I think this might be one of my favourites from Perranporth.

One of my favourite places we visited in Cornwall has to be the Eden Project.

I could honestly spend an entire day wandering around here with a camera. There is just so much to look at, from the plants and flowers to the architecture, sculptures and all the little details you probably wouldn’t notice on a first visit.

This was taken inside the Mediterranean Biome, looking at Tim Shaw’s The Rites of Dionysus. The sculptures depict Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and merriment, along with his followers, the Maenads, surrounded by grapevines.

I loved how this particular scene came together. The bronze figure in the foreground, the vines and plants all around him, the people wandering through the background and then that incredible structure of the Biome stretching above it all.

The Eden Project is one of those places where I could quite happily just keep taking photographs. Every time you turn a corner there seems to be another view, another plant, another sculpture or something completely unexpected.

I absolutely love this place and I already know that whenever we’re back in Cornwall, we’ll be visiting again.

There’s just something about Eden that makes you want to slow down, look around and appreciate what’s actually in front of you.
