Seascapes begins next week!

Can’t quite believe it, but this’ll be the seventh year running the Seascapes workshop now. Always one of my favourites – relaxed, out on the coast, decent company and (hopefully) some golden light.

It kicks off next Thursday, May 1st and runs for 5 weeks, every Thursday evening from 6.30pm to sunset. We’ll be hitting some cracking spots along the North Yorkshire coast – Saltwick, Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes, Whitby etc (depending on light/tides/attendee mobility) – with a different location each week.

It’s a great one for building a set of images, trying new compositions, and just spending time doing what we all love.

🚐 Minibus pick-up from Yarm if you need it, or meet us on location. There's a group of 5 currently so I still have a couple of places left if anyone would like to join us!

A few frames from a recent trip to Anfield, historic home of Liverpool F.C.

This trip gave me the chance to bring two parts of my world together. Alongside photography, I run a little football shirt shop in Yarm with my daughter Eliza — it’s called Ultra Football Shirts. We’re focused on vintage and second-hand kits.

We spent a day in Liverpool together taking pictures and chatting football.... the perfect way to spend time with your teenage girl!

Week 3 on the river — freezing cold but full of focus.
This week our beginners moved out of full manual and started exploring semi-auto modes (AV, TV), learning how to control exposure and make creative decisions on the fly.
It was icy down there last night, the temperature fluctuations this month are huge! 🥶🥶☀️☀️

I was photographing Crinan recently—a quiet harbour village on Scotland’s west coast, where the sea stretches out toward Jura and you have wonderful views of the inner Hebridean islands.

Along the waterfront this man was sitting alone with a cup in hand, gazing out at the water enjoying the fine weather and the serenity of it all.

I said a simple hello, as you do. He looked up, returned my greeting, and invited me to, “Pull up a chair.”

How could I resist!

For the next ten minutes, we sat and talked—about where we were from, what brought us there and general chit chat. He was a born and bred Highlander, looking after a friend’s cottage and their cats. I told him I was in the area running a photography workshop. He was one of those people who you could talk to all day.

There was something about those few minutes that made this part of the day memorable —just two strangers sharing a bit of time and a stunning view.

That second photo is what we were looking at. Not a bad view eh?

It was the invitation that stayed with me. A simple moment, made special by a few words: pull up a chair. Thanks pal.
