White-tailed Eagles near Strontian at Garbh Eilean Wildlife Hide. I watched as one of the eagles took a greylag gosling so it could feed its 2 chicks in a nest across the loch. I have seen a number of White-tailed Eagles whilst in the Hebrides and on the West Coast, but there are not many places you can stop and watch them when you have been driving.

This is my second trip to see the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd. My first trip was so amazing, I had to return for a second visit on my way to drop off my hire car in Inverness. This time far surpassed my first as I went a little later in the season, with the calves being introduced to the group of visitors. I’ve been told I need to visit towards the end of the year next time so I’m now preparing for a third visit!

I got so much packed into my Scotland trip, including 7 nights on mainland: Commando Memorial, Neptune’s Staircase, Ardverikie Estate, Corpach Shipwreck, Glenfinnan Viaduct, Glencoe & Glen Etive, Inverness, Cairngorm Mountain Railway, Nevis Range Gondola, Cairngorm Reindeer Herd, Eilean Donan Castle and Chanonry Point.

What I will remember: the very long walk from a lay-by to Ardverikie House (if anybody remembers Monarch of the Glen TV show), gorgeous reindeer calves (look at my next post for the photos, you won’t be disappointed), snow on the tops of Ben Nevis and on the Cairngorms, walking up to a viewpoint for Glenfinnan Viaduct and finding it wasn’t the right one, realizing my suitcase wheel was broken and having to replace it (after only using it for 1 day), and seeing my first ever pine marten outside my Airbnb but the photos were awful as it was very dark.

Whoever knows me, should know I absolutely love the sad clowns of the sea so a trip to Lunga was needed. I knew it was an incline onto Lunga from the boat, but I wasn’t expecting so many rocks and peddles to be in my path. How I didn’t go over on my ankle again while I’ve been away has been a miracle really! I did think Staffa would be difficult walking for Fingal’s Cave but it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I thought… until you came up to someone coming in the opposite direction.

This was one of my favourite experiences of my trip: an evening cruise from Kyle of Lochalsh on the Waverley Paddle Steamer. The Waverley is the last sea-faring passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world, celebrating its 80th birthday this year. The Lochalsh Junior Pipe Band played Scotland the Brave as we left the harbour and headed for Skye Bridge. I would do this experience again in a heartbeat!

Only 5 days later, I happened to be waiting at Corran Ferry Terminal when the Waverley sailed past on a journey from Fort William to Iona.

I was only on Uist for a night, where the waters surrounding the islands are turquoise blue and the beaches are white and completely devoid of people. I was unable to find a cafe on North Uist when my ferry landed as they were closed for a funeral taking place on the island. This made me realise that these islands may be small but they are a very tight-knit community, I was happy to wait for my coffee until later in the day.

Iona has a special place in a lot of people’s lives and I can understand why; it is such a tranquil and beautiful place. With only up to 300 people living on the island, Iona is primarily a place for walkers or cyclists (I don’t think I saw more than 10 cars driving on the island while I was there).

I will remember: trying to get up Dun I, Iona’s highest point, but I spent an hour walking all over moorlands trying to find a path to begin the climb so had to give it up, spotting the elusive corncrakes, walking along the White Strand of the Monks beach and visiting Iona Abbey.
