earlier this week we had a puffin building his nest. This is a recent picture of a puffin nesting on land and so he has to dig a burrow with his strong beak. I waited a while before this little puffin popped up

This Puffin was spotted last week being very busy building a nest. However it does look like there are a few too many twigs for a little bird. The male bird usually excavates a hole in a crevice in the cliff face or makes a burrow if on the ground. These tunnels can be up to 3ft deep.

This very stylish black and white bird if a Razorbill and I took this photo on nearby cliffs as they have come inshore to build nests. They can hunt for fish up to 20metres below the surface of the sea. They are called razorbills because their thick black beak is very sharp

This is an eagle owl sitting by a stream in Cumbria. They are the largest of the owl family and are now being seen regularly back in the UK. It was said that in olden days when they let out their rather sinister scream it was an omen of bad luck. To make the stream water appear to freeze I had to shoot the picture at very fast shutter speed and use a tripod.

This is an unusual picture of juvenile common terns playing in a rock pool. They usually stay near the cliffs with their mother until they go off to sea. During the breeding and nesting season the adult terns take part in what is called a Dread. This is odd behaviour where they all rise up from the ground and circle arount the nesting sites. this can involve hundreds of birds. The reason is not known but it may be to scare off preditors when there will be young birds about.

This is a group of young fallow deer. They are the most elegant of our deer breeds. They were introduced by the Normans in the 11th century and are now to be seen in most places in the UK. The young live with their mothers in groups for most of the year and only get together with the Stags during the mating season. They are very sociable animals and this group were very interested in watching me and my camera.

These two ducks are mallards and they feed by dabbling in the water to graze on aquatic plants and sometimes eat small frogs.
These two seemed to be a bit over enthusiastic in their efforts to feed.

This was taken in Salalah in the south of Oman. This is a quiet uncommercialised area and we took a days drive along the fabulous coast of the Arabian sea to reach a quiet beach. This was during the monsoon season when the countryside comes alive with a lush green landscape.
When we were sitting on the beach after a swim enjoying a picnic we found we were in the company of some locals who were enjoying a leisurely stroll along the beach.

Bempton Cliffs where these female gannets were photographed is the largest mainland
gannet colony in Britain. It is particularly busy now for the breeding season and you can have a pleasant walk along the cliff tops and see lots of birds.
I just thought looking at these three ladies sitting around a table shaped rock that they looked like "Ladies who lunch", so I added a treat for them.

This was taken a few days ago and this young Herring Gull had landed on a precarious
cliff face and stood there for a while not sure whether he could move forward of step backwards. After quite a few minutes he shuffled around to face the sea and flew away.
