Mart's Arts

Mart's Arts My art has shifted towards more painting and mixed media, which is a joy! My ambition is to at last allow myself to produce, show and sell my work.

I've always been an artist, working in many different media, but distracted myself by following other paths. My Etsy shop is at www.martsarts.etsy.com

On my 50th birthday, in July 2013, I decide to give my creativity a sharp poke by completing an artwork every week. This could be just a sketch for an idea, a photo, a birthday card, a print, a 3d artwork of some kind; anything as long as it happen

ed. This has been a revelation; its tricky too, but the ideas keep on coming. Everything I make is for sale, or to order if it's gone already.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes! I feel remarkably peaceful and content today. ###

Plastic bottle puppets; I'm trying them out for a workshop at Matemwe school in Zanzibar, using cloth, bottles, rope and other flotsam from the beach. The heads will hopefully be mango seeds not just bits of wood like these! In the 2nd pic the woman's clothes are much to European, but then I found an orange kanga to cut up and dress her properly Tanzanian style!

Having a reluctant-to-Facebook phase, I'm sure everyone has them! At last I've been getting on with the pomegranate door panel; 6 boxes of glass cut and all edges blunted, so now I'm cutting the lead and fitting the pieces prior to painting. Quite a lot of grozing necessary (edge nibbling) to get a precise fit!

Pomegranate door panel; I've cut out the green, which is a lovely Lamberts mouth-blown olive glass. It's ages since I cut any glass so I had a practice doing concave cuts on some scraps. Its great to be doing this again; cutting and grozing. (thats fine-tuning the shape by scraping/crumbling the edge with small pliers; tiny glass bits fly everywhere!) Still the ruby and pale green to cut, then clean up all the edges before I can paint.

York montage... the buildings all exist but not in this order! I just need to fill in the river, add the 2 most important boats (Two Hoots Icecream Boat and Stickleback River Cafe), a few trees etc, and trace it all!

Starling apron finally finished and given to Mum, as we've been down to London to see her this half-term. Mum does not like having her picture taken! I'm hoping to turn the design into a fabric print as well, maybe a t-shirt, shopping bag, other things, so I've got some good photos to work on taken before I sewed the pocket on. The starlings here are all made of dark blue ribbon.

Sketch from years ago. I've always had a thing about hanging the washing out, probably because going to the laundry as a kid to do so gave me some peace and time alone, (fairly large family, grew up in a 'commune', lots of people around etc!) Anyway, washing lines have an automatic and good association with peace, for me, so this peg sketch was the start of what into a series of 3 glass blocks with just that; washing on a line > becoming tattered > prayer flags releasing good thoughts into the wind. I've never successfully photographed the blocks, they are really tricky to do! Will have another try soon.
