This is the second of four of my images have reached the finals of the Remembering Leopards photo contest. Please check out Remembering Wildlife and support the kickstarter if you can! It’s an amazing project! To date, Remembering Wildlife has distributed more than £1m GBP/$1.3m USD to conservation projects and with Remembering Leopards, hopes to take that total even higher. This is Hugs - the beautiful Fig with her second daughter who made it to adulthood, Furaha - and was taken with my friend and guide James Nampaso at Kicheche Camps

Happy New Year. It always feels such a funny time of year when I look back at what’s happened over the last year and in this year’s case feeling sorry for myself about the cold bug I just can’t shift. Early in 2022 we had the sad news of Fig passing. I often look back with so much fondness (and feel lucky) over the time I spent with her. This is one of my first encounters with her, back in March 2012. Who knew then how special she would become. Sending my best for the year ahead to you all.

The Future King
Today is
With so many photos of lions on social media, it’s not obvious that lion numbers are in big decline. They have lost c.95% of their habitat and numbers have fallen more than 40% in a few decades. It is easy to criticise from afar but it is the same pattern for a lot of wildlife across the world.
This photo is of two of the offbeat pride taken in Mara North Conservancy (Masai Mara, Kenya) last week. They had taken a wildebeest overnight and it was a pleasure to spend a few hours or so watching the pride eat, play and drive mum crazy!

Fig.
There was incredibly sad news from the Mara yesterday, that Fig has passed away.
I realise there is a lot of sadness and craziness in the world at the moment and people going through horrendous things. I am totally gutted about the news but I appreciate it is nature, that she had a good life and has brought four cubs you to adulthood. I had so much fun spending time with her and thank you in particular to James Nampaso and the guides at Kicheche Bush Camp for all of those fun times!
Here’s a selection of photos, starting with her as a cub in March 2012, her son Olare, her with Figlet, her with Furaha and then her last cub Faulu back in November. And finally some photos which bring back great memories from the last few years. Rest in peace my friend.

Looking Forward
It’s been a long time since I posted but today is and it seemed a good day to come back! Hope you are all well.
Sadly, lions need all the help they can get. Please consider supporting Mara Predator Conservation Programme or look at www.worldlionday.com for other ideas.
Taken in the Mara Triangle in December 2020. I long to be back in the Mara!

Fly By
Had a fun afternoon with this guy close to home at RSPB Bempton Cliffs yesterday.
Normally I’m there in the spring and summer to see puffins and gannets, but he was worth standing in the cold and mud!

Growing Up
Furaha last December. Mum left her to fend for herself incredibly young, but she’s done an amazing job and I’ve heard she was sighted this morning! Hopefully I’ll be back to see her soon....
