A Xikrin man has his body painted in his sister's home in the Amazonian village if Poti-Kro. The men and women here are struggling with the construction of the Amazon's first mega-dam, which has thrown life in this remote part of the Amazon into upheaval.

Xikrin children attend school in their village deep in the Amazon jungle. Many indigenous villages now have access to education and healthcare provider by the Brazilian government. Despite these services, though, COVID has reached the Xikrin, where the death rate is 40x higher than the rest of Brazil.

Digging back through the archives and wanted to post some pictures of the Xikrin people in the Brazilian Amazon from 2013. The Xikrin, called People of the Big Water, are an indigenous group living, fishing, and hunting near the Xingu River in Para State. In 2012, Brazil started building the world's third largest hydropower dam a few miles away, bringing in tens of thousands of workers, decimating fishing, and completely upending what was until then a very traditional lifestyle. In March, I was just a few days away from a trip to Mongolia to cover a number of different stories. They closed the borders and we ended up flying home to the States instead.
