In Ghana, many people who do not own private vehicles depend on the public transport system for their daily commute.

The most common modes of transport are the minibuses, popularly known as trotros, and shared taxis. While some offer a fairly comfortable ride, others bear the marks of years of service, making comfort a luxury rather than a guarantee.

Beyond their distinctive yellow commercial number plates, Ghanaian taxis are easily recognised by the yellow paint on the four exterior corners of the vehicle, a simple yet iconic feature that sets them apart, regardless of the car’s original colour.

These taxis are more than just a means of transportation; they are a familiar part of Ghana’s urban landscape and a reflection of everyday life.

AKUSE JUNCTION TO TEMA

On my way back from a short trip yesterday, I took the front seat in a trotro and, as we journeyed from Akuse Junction to Tema, I captured a few moments through the windscreen of the moving vehicle.

The winding roads, lush greenery, wandering baboons, broken-down vehicles, and passing pedestrians were more than just photographic subjects. They became reminders of life’s journey. A path filled with twists, unexpected pauses, beauty, and challenges, each with a story of its own.

Sometimes, all we need to do is keep moving and appreciate the view along the way.

THE MILITARY PULLING-OUT CEREMONY

One of the most distinctive traditions in the military is the Pulling-Out Ceremony, held to honour a senior officer who is retiring or relinquishing a command appointment, whether through reassignment or retirement.

The ceremony usually begins with a military durbar or parade, where officers, soldiers, and invited guests gather to celebrate the outgoing commander’s leadership, dedication, and distinguished service.

The most symbolic moment comes at the end of the ceremony, when the outgoing officer is ceremonially escorted from the parade ground in an official vehicle. Senior officers then pull the vehicle with ceremonial ropes, signifying the officer’s departure from command and marking the successful completion of their tenure.

Far more than a colourful display of military tradition, the Pulling-Out Ceremony is a powerful expression of honour, respect, and gratitude for selfless service to the nation.

It is a reminder that while command may change hands, the legacy of dedicated leadership endures.
