MILOS - HIDDEN GEM OF ALYKES

Beyond the popular spots, Milos holds a few hidden treasures that reveal a different side of the island. Here are two magical places in Alykes that most visitors and even some locals miss:

1️⃣ Alykes Salt Flats:
Located between the airport and Kanava, the Alykes salt flats are a quiet, picturesque area with a history tied to the island’s salt production. Wander around the salt flats (please be respectful and don’t walk across the actual salt), and you’ll find yourself immersed in a tranquil setting where salt crystals glisten under the sun. This spot is a photographer’s dream, especially at sunset, when the pink hues of the sky reflect beautifully over the flats. It’s a peaceful escape, where you can witness a different, more secluded side of Milos.

2️⃣ Thermal Springs of Alykes:
For a truly unique experience , visit the Thermal Springs just a stones throw away from the salt flats. Formed by volcanic activity, these natural springs, bubble up through the sand of Alykes beach. Feeling the heat of the sand through your toes as you walk along the water’s edge was such a wild sensation. One that everyone should experience at least once in their life.

Once the heat escapes the sand, it mixes with the cool seawater to create a comfortably warm, soothing dip. Ancient locals believed in the healing properties of these mineral-rich waters, which which continue to remain free and accessible to all.

I heard about this place from a local and couldn’t find much about them online, so if this interests you then save this post.

MILOS - MINING ADVENTURE

Ever wondered how a volcanic island like Milos has shaped history beneath its surface? From ancient obsidian used by prehistoric peoples to modern mineral extraction, Milos has been a mineral treasure trove for thousands of years. 🏝️

One of the most fascinating stops is Paliorema, where the eerie remains of sulfur mines stand frozen in time along the coast. The rusting machinery and crumbling buildings tell a story of hard work, industry, and connection to the land. It’s not just history—it’s a rugged, off-the-beaten-path adventure that brings you face to face with the island’s core ⛏️

If you want to dig deeper , then you can also visit the Milos Mining Museum . It’s a place where you can learn about the tools, techniques, and people who have made Milos famous for its minerals.

But as you explore, remember—these mines aren’t just for show. They were once functional, but have now become abandoned. Thus obey the signs, be mindful of unstable terrain and wear sturdy shoes. 🦺 A little caution will go a long way to keeping your adventure smooth and safe!
