The Silver Arowana (ππ π‘ππππππ π π’π ππππππβππ π’π)
is also known as the 'water monkey' due to its ability to project out of the water to catch its prey. They are also sometimes known as βdragonfish' due to their shiny, armor-like scales and double barbels which resemble dragons of common Asian folklore. This South American species is native to the Amazon, Essequibo, and Oyapock basins and its diet usually consist of snails and crustaceans, though the remains of larger animals like bats, birds, and snakes have been found in their stomach.
While the Silver Arowana is not listed on the IUCN red list, it is one of the most popular ornamental fish from South America which leads to conflict between those who utilize it for ornamental purposes and those who rely on it for food.
