The sun dips low over Berbice, casting long, skeletal shadows across these unfinished frames and quiet rooftops. There is a specific kind of heavy gold that settles over Guyana in the late afternoon, it feels like both a promise and a goodbye. The true El Dorado 💛
As I look at this horizon, I’m thinking about what it means to be lost. Not the kind of lost where you can’t find a street sign, but the kind where you are standing exactly where you’re supposed to be, yet you feel completely adrift.
In a few of these photos, you see houses in various stages of completion. Some are homes; others are just concrete pillars reaching for a sky that’s moving on without them.
Sometimes, family feels like these unfinished structures. We talk a lot about "abandonment" as if it’s a single event.. a door slamming or a person leaving. But often, it's a slow erosion. It’s the silence that grows between people who share a last name but no longer share a life. It’s being left to finish the "building" of your own soul by yourself because the people who were supposed to help lay the foundation decided to walk away.
The sunset light doesn't just touch the completed houses; it hits the broken pillars, too.
I’ve realized that family isn't just the blood that flows through your veins; that’s just biology. True family is the scaffolding that stays up when the storm hits. It’s the people who show up when you’re "under construction" and don't have much to offer but a dream of what you might become.
Family is Consistency: It’s not the flash of the golden hour; it’s the steady light that stays after the sun goes down.
Family is Grace: It’s the space where you are allowed to be lost until you’re ready to be found.
..finding my way Home 🏡
Being "lost" isn't a failure; it’s often just the middle of the journey. If you feel abandoned by the people who should have stayed, remember that an unfinished house can still be completed. You can choose who gets to help you put on the roof. You can choose who gets to sit at your table.
My point is, the sun sets every single day, and every single time, it proves that the darkness is only temporary. We aren't defined by who left us behind in the shadows; we are defined by the light we seek out for ourselves.
