I’m not one that’s known for being able to sit still. I constantly have more than one thing going on. If I have a movie on, I also have my phone in hand and the computer on. I wake up with a laundry list of things to do and feel a sense of anxiety if it’s not completed but a sense of accomplishment if I can run through the list and get things done.
The other day I was reminded to sit down for just a moment and enjoy my morning coffee and stop running around trying to do a million different things. It hit me, I need to slow down and enjoy moments. Moments that will never come back again.
As I sit here writing this enveloped by the most stunning sunset, I’m learning to slow down and take it all in. To cherish moments like this. Cherish me time. Cherish time with loved ones. Cherish the good and bad for all that can and will be learned from them.
I can feel the new year starting off amazing already. I’m ready. Sending everyone so much love on this blessed Friday. ❤️

Over the past few weeks I have both witnessed and experienced varying levels of racism. Stereotypes of different forms, assumptions of who we are. I am Chinese, I am proud to be Chinese and I always will be. I look in the mirror and I’m forever proud of my heritage, my culture and I continue to explore what the East has to offer. My wings will continue to explore and I know there is so much still to discover.

We aren’t Oriental’s who only make rugs, copy your perceived fabulousness western craft or have to seek your approval at every turn. Surprise, the East have so much creative talent, artisans and craftsmen. Shocker.

To have to fight daily to prove your worth in a society where we are all global citizens in this day and age is ludicrous to me and yet here we are today. 2023.

Allowing such behaviour and ignorance to continue makes us part of the problem and silence I cannot be any longer.

West, meet the East.

It’s hard to smile as the world calls into question what it means to be human, and how to live with empathy. As we watch innocent lives - men, women, children, animals, being taken away, it’s feels impossible to not be angry, sad and full of rage, let alone smile.

For those also feeling the pain and agony, I feel you, I hear you, I see you, and I too, feel what you are feeling. I may not look at this image and smile, but I try hard to remind myself and those around me of what it means to be a human filled with hundreds of different emotions.

It’s easy to see ugliness in the world around us. Grit & grime. But I realise I see the world in a different way. I find beauty in the mundane. It tells a story of resilience, fighting against all odds and growing despite the head winds.

I created the Kitchenscape series back in 2006. It evolved over time but started out when I was craving for some hometown food whilst living in London, specifically a hot bowl of soupy noodles & a Hong Kong style milk tea. I scoured Chinatown and finally came across HK Diner. The roasted meats hanging in the window reminded me of the traditional diners back home, an immediate first sign of authenticity. The clanking of bowls, screaming orders and windows dripping with condensation made it all the more comforting.

I ordered a Hong Kong style milk tea and was not disappointed. Next came the soupy noodles, a taste of home indeed. I quickly befriended the owner Jon who I learned had moved from Hong Kong to London more than 20 years prior. I thanked him for bringing making this homesick girls day and promised to come back again.

I continued to frequent HK Diner during my first year in London and one day asked if I could take some photos of the roasted meats section. Curious as to my intrigue, Jon asked what was so special about his open kitchen. The condensation in the windows, the steam, the hanging meats, and buckets of raw ingredients were what Jon saw. I saw texture, almost paint like quality. Different tones colliding together that made for an abstract composition. I was invited back to photograph his lower floor kitchen in the morning before he opened. The scene was contrary to the bustling kitchen one would expect. The moment was calm, the woks were still, the plates were neatly stacked up and offered a surreal palate. The quietness resonated.

Sometimes having to explain what we do as photographers can be quite challenging but when the subject holds such personal meaning, no explanation is necessary.

Sadly HK Diner closed in 2016, ten years after I first visited. Thankfully these photographs live forever and hope it brings a smile to Jon and his teams face. Such is the beauty of photography.

Thank you Jon and HK Diner for such a beautiful memory.
